Altitude

Altitude

I know a place, nested in the mountains of Africa,
like a bowl set between the peaks that form the rim,
tipped down towards the south, higher in the north,
so that the rill running down through the vale
collects in a little lake at the lowest lip,
a pool clear and cold, rippled by the wind,
before the stream pours over the edge, to fall in a veil
of white water, lacelike in the sight of eagles.
