Heading 1 Dogs Heading 2 What myths about dogs do you know? Hook Have you used dogs in any of you stories? About This Newsletter “Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear.” Dave Barry “Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.” Groucho Marx, The Essential Groucho: Writings For By And About Groucho Marx “A dog reflects the family life. Whoever saw a frisky dog in a gloomy family, or a sad dog in a happy one? Snarling people have snarling dogs, dangerous people have dangerous ones.” Arthur Conan Doyle, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes Letter From the Editor Dogs have been humans best friends' for uncounted millennia. Sometimes, I suspect this friendship started when dogs realized that it was easier and safer to hunt with packs of humans than with packs of their own kind. However, this partnership started, it has been mutually beneficial to both parties. Over the years of this partnership, we--humans--have created myths in which dogs are the central characters. These myths have not always portrayed dogs as friendly, tail wagging companions. Many of the myths, describe dogs as some type of evil creature. Hounds to be weary of, and avoid, if at all possible. In some of the myths, dogs are loyal companions. Examples of these are Argos and Cabal. Argos was Odysseus' pet, and he waited twenty years, on the doorstep, for Odysseus to return. Cabal was the dog King Arthur took with him on boar hunts. The less friendly or completely unfriendly dogs are Black Shuck, Barghest, Cerberus, Qiqirn, Axehandle Hound, Luison, and Pesanta. Black Shuck has a midnight black coat and fiery eyes. Cerberus is the three headed dog guarding Hades. Axehandle Hound has the head of an axe and the body of an axe handle. I have mentioned only of few of the fearsome and friendly dogs in mythology. Do you know of any more? Have you written a story with a dog in it? Do you have a story about a dog that can turn into a human or some other creature? Editors Picks
