The Ghost of You

dawn snakes golden fingers in
and around the window slats
pulling me from sleep

I pull the sheets
tightly grasping the last moments
your fingers entwined in mine

your voice echoes from
a distant world, it fades
muffled by the shuffling of slippered feet

plodding to the coffee pot
the rhythm of the lonely
trudging through the day

yet your ghost remains
caught in the folds
of the rumpled bed
