PROMPT March 18th
If you were hired to show tourists what life is really like where you live, what would you show them or have them do?
We live in the hills overlooking Perth, Western Australia. If I was a tour guide I’d take them to Mundaring Weir. This was built to supply the Goldfields during the gold rush in 1890. Water used to cost more than gold in those times, it was so scarce and precious.
The man who built it was C.Y. O’Connor. Public opinion of the day thought it couldn’t work with the pipeline being so long. On the day it was turned on, water didn’t flow. He was devastated and drowned himself in the sea. The next day water flowed into the town of Kalgoorlie, 560 kilometres away.
During the Spring Western Australia is home to more different wildflowers than any other place in the world. So that’s when I’d take my tour bus around, spotting rare orchids, or fields full of everlasting daisies.
We are famous for our wineries. Wine tasting would be on the tour, sampling our Swan River reds and whites.
