Working for peanuts
25. What has been your favourite job?

I've only ever worked for family, so it's hard to answer this question.
I started work when I was fifteen in our family delicatessen. The hours were endless. The boss, being my mother, was flexible I suppose, but work never ended as we lived on the premises.

My next job was working for my boyfriend's father. He was a Bookmaker, Turf Account or any other name you like for a bookie.
He owned five betting shops. I was the race caller This entailed listening to the races and repeating the race and results to the other shops. I liked this job although it could be quite frenetic at times when there were eight or more race meetings at the same time.
I was then promoted to running my own betting shop. I did this until I left to have my first child.
After that we opened our own ladies dress shop and a book exchange shop. We ran those together, my husband and I, until we left England and came to Australia.
After that we opened a book exchange which we we ran together for 35 years.
I'm not sure what it would have been like to get a regular pay packet or wage, I always seemed to work for peanuts or money for my family.
