"January 16, 2018" "Prompt: Imagine what it would look, sound, and smell like, and how it would feel to have your childhood home overtaken by nature. Try using this eerie space as the setting for a short story, poem or blog entry." I don't need to imagine because I grew up on a farm in a very old, not very well built house. We lived as much off the land as we did off of anything else so it was not unusual to have large crops from nature in the house. We would have gallons of raspberries in the spring as my family loved black raspberry cobbler and black raspberry jelly. We also ate a lot of wild greens, which meant there would be smells of various green leafy plants. One could usually smell chickens because we had a chicken coop near our house with over 100 chickens in the spring and usually as many bitties chirping in a box in our living room under a heat lamp. The smell of wood and often coal would permeate our house much of the time as they were our heat source. The smell of water was a constant friend as we lived near the creek bank and at times were threatened with floods. Yes, nature was constantly in our house. |
