Rosie woke up bright and early the following morning. She seemed to be feeling better today, not good, but definitely better. Maybe it was just knowing that there was a small possibility she could save Amy’s life, or at least she hoped she could before... it was too late.

She carefully checked the house for any signs of Mum before she set up the living room for the spell they were casting later.

Rosie threw the contents of the fancy glass coffee table into a big, oak cabinet that lay next to the bookcase in the living room. She placed a bowl of fresh water in the middle of it, as Amber had rung her up last night insisting she do this, and then got out some matches. Just in case.

With a deep breath Rosie pulled out Amy’s charm bracelet from the pocket of her black jeans. It rattled slightly and Rosie felt a tear prick her eyes as for the billionth time in the last two days she read over the words Best sister. She was only now realising how true that actually was.

Rosie swiftly wiped away her tears with the back of her left hand and placed the delicate bracelet on a small silver tray. Another thing Amber had said she would need on the phone. Rosie couldn’t help but look down at it all in puzzlement; she really didn’t get how this was going to work at all. But she decided to just do it anyway. Just in case.

When she glanced at the clock she saw she had time to kill until Amber and Shane arrived. She’d purposely set everything up as slowly as she possibly could and took extra time in the shower that morning, but that still didn’t stop it only being ten, thirty.

Rosie sighed and went upstairs. She’d been intending to go into her room and relax for a little while, but somehow she’d ended up stood outside Amy’s bedroom door. She read the poster taped to Amy’s door Keep out or I will kill you. That means you Rosie!

Rosie’s lips curled into a small smile at the words, so Amy-like. Ignoring the poster, she turned the handle. Amy’s room was decorated in a bold, hot pink that dazzled Rosie’s eyes, and she had countless posters of boy bands stuck all across one bedroom wall, making a collage-like appearance. Rosie walked over to Amy’s bed and sat down on the flowery duvet. Amy’s room was a lot smaller than hers, but it was still really nice. There was a huge wardrobe that took up the majority of the room placed nicely in the corner, and a white dressing table beside it, filled with all the make-up Amy liked to pile on her already pretty face.

Before she knew it the tears came again, but this time they were much, much stronger. Rosie lay back on the soft, fluffy pillows and sat there in silence, letting her grief overcome her for a little while. What emotions she’d managed to keep under control yesterday, were now spilling out of her like an angry volcano.

Rosie awoke to a hasty knock at the front door. She looked around in confusion; she was still in Amy’s room. Rosie guessed she must have fallen asleep and sprung up from the bed, and then sprinted down the thirteen steps of the stairs.

She undid the many locks on the front door; Mum had installed them the other day because of Amy’s disappearance, and then swung it open, revealing a very nervous looking Amber and Shane.

They both eyed her in annoyance, and then with a quick look around the neighbourhood behind them, stepped over the threshold.

“You do know we’re not supposed to be here, right?” Shane asked with an edge to his voice and a hint of a glare spread across his handsome features.

“I’m...sorry,” Rosie stuttered, “I fell asleep.”

Amber laughed with more good nature than Shane was mustering this afternoon. “Rosie, you make me laugh,” she said, and made her way into the living room, carrying a black bag with her.

Shane looked back at Rosie guiltily. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to be rude.”

“It’s okay.” Rosie smiled. “We’re all stressed out these days.”

Shane smiled back genuinely, and then followed Amber inside.

When Rosie walked in with three cans of Pepsi they’d already finished setting up the candles and putting some leaf-like Earthy things and some dirty looking mud Amber had brought on the coffee table.

Rosie handed them both their drinks and staring at the coffee table in wonder asked, “Everything going okay?”

Amber nodded and took a grateful swig from her drink. She picked up the Spell book from yesterday and opened it to the page with the weird symbol. Rosie watched in amazement as she lay her hand down on the pile of dirt and closed her eyes. A moment later when Amber lifted up her hand the symbol was copied onto there, an exact replica of the one in the book.

“This is to help us locate her, by putting it in the Earth it should be able to tell us where she is,” Amber explained with a warm smile. “We’re going to find her, Rosie.”

Rosie forced more tears back before they could trickle down her face, and nodded.

“Okay,” Amber said and laid the Spell book open on the coffee table so both her and Shane could see it. Shane took a quick glance at the symbol, and then turned to the next page where the words of the spell were written.

Rosie didn’t know what to do with herself, so she just sat down on the sofa and watched them, fascinated.

“Right, Amber,” Shane began, “put your right hand in the bowl of water.” He looked up. “It’s best for you to do this right, since water’s your thing?”

“Yes, it’ll be more powerful,” Amber agreed. She placed her right hand in the water and Rosie saw the change in her eye colour again. They were more vibrant, more colourful, more... everything. It was as if they were just suddenly enhanced.

“Okay, I guess you just keep your hand in there, whilst I light the candles,” Shane said, he didn’t sound as confident at witchcraft as Amber seemed. Or maybe he’s just nervous, Rosie thought.

“I guess it’ll be more powerful since that’s your thing.” Amber winked.

Shane rolled his eyes and focused on the candle nearest to him on the table. His eyes were controlled, and very intense. Rosie felt the atmosphere in the room change, it felt as though the heaters had just come on full blast and were spreading a raging heat wave throughout the entire room.

As a bead of sweat was about to form on Rosie’s forehead, the candle lit, a huge bright orange flame flickering wildly from it.

Before Shane closed his eyes she thought she saw them glowing the same bright orange as the candles, but she couldn’t be a hundred percent sure it wasn’t just the candle’s almost luminous reflection.

When he opened his eyes again all the other candles were lit, and his eyes were the cute, deep brown colour they normally were.

“Wow,” Rosie said aloud. “That was pretty amazing.”

Shane looked across at her and smiled cockily. “Of course,” he said, and winked.

His eyes lingered on hers for a moment, before turning back to the spell book. “Next Amber, I’ll translate these words and you repeat them.”

Amber nodded and closed her eyes, swishing her hands around in the water bowl to a nonexistent rhythm.

Shane concentrated on the book, and read, “‘From Water to Earth, I bind you together’.”

With her eyes still closed, Amber repeated, “From Water to Earth, I bind you together.”

Shane reached across and lightly pulled out Amber’s dripping hand from the water. He smiled an amused smile before placing her hand onto the dirt, which held the copied symbol.

Amber’s face scrunched up in a grimace, and Rosie couldn’t help but chuckling.

“Now, repeat this, ‘Water, I command you to absorb and recognize this symbol’.” Amber repeated the words correctly and she sounded very sure and in control. Shane picked up her hand once again and put it back in the water bowl. He carefully picked up the bracelet and held it inches from the candle’s flame. “‘Fire, I command you to burn all the tracks to which hide the owner of this bracelet’.”

Shane nodded to Amber who quickly glanced over at the next line of the spell. “‘Water, I command you to clear the fire so we can see the path we must follow’.”

Rosie gasped as she saw the water in the bowl twinkle in life, and the flame of the candle’s dim down to a smaller flame.

Shane dropped the bracelet on the mud which still held the mystical symbol. He smiled an apology across at Rosie, before placing his hand onto it, smushing the bracelet and its charms into the dirty, wet mud. He took Amber’s left hand and they both chanted, “Earth, Fire, and Water, we feel your presence here today, we ask you to grant us the location of Amy Parker!”

Rosie stared at them, fingers crossed in hope as they chanted the words another two times.

When they were done, they let go of each other’s hands and Amber took her left hand from the bowl of water, and dried it with a handy towel lay beside her.

The symbol was now gone from the mud, the water was no longer twinkling magically, and the only things left were the tiny, light flames coming from the tall, waxy cream candles.

Rosie gulped and asked, “Did it work?”

“We’ll see,” Shane said, and blew out the remaining candles in one big puff. All the lights in the house went out with a loud spark.
