LIKE SWARMING BEES
LIKE SWARMING BEES

When I lie down and crave for sleep,
There comes to me a swarm
Of memories, some of which sting,
And some that me do charm.

This swarm of bees wards off my sleep
And stings me to the quick.
It leaves behind wounds in my heart,
Which through the night I lick.

Why did I love? And why gave up?
Why did I cry? Why wept?
Why promises made by either
Of us could not be kept?

Why both of us did separate?
Why we could not pull on?
Should I have heeded mind or heart?
Which’s stronger, tears or brawn?

Like swarming bees such questions do
Torment me all the night.
Silently, till I breathe my last,
I must suffer this blight.
