i was really happy, about crash. ernie makes the point that an oscar doesn't mean much, as the academy has rendered itself completely unreliable over the years, and i don't disagree, but still. a little messy, yes, but still an important film, and if nothing else, an oscar win usually translates to curious people going to rent the movie, and i think that's good. it's one that i wish everyone could see, and talk about, incisively and frankly. which can't happen, because some people hate it. but that would be cool. i am, in fact, glad that it beat out brokeback mountain, even though i thought that was great, too. i'm still confused as to how i accomplished this, but i got the guys to see it last night, and they were horrified, in a predictable homophobic sort of way. unable to get past the superficials, and down to the love story. whereas crash, which was clumsy, but packed a lot of meaning into every conspicuous punch, held their attention, and held it fast. not that that makes it a better movie, because they're dumb boys. so then i don't know what my point is, but it's something. probably that i shouldn't have tried to take those dummies to see something quite so controversial. furthermore, because this is becoming sort of a general rant against ignorance, i will tell you something i HATE. i HATE it when people, usually when they're answering survey questions, say things like "i like all types of music," and then proceed to list all the white-bread alternative groups they listen to. seventeen different incarnations of fallout boy. THAT IS NOT ALL THERE IS. few things irritate me as much as that does. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
