AN ODE TO A TEACHER
AN ODE TO A TEACHER

[One who is the giver of knowledge is the giver of life]

You, the giver of knowledge;
You, imparter of wisdom;
You, who bring light to darkness;
To you, O Teacher, I bow.

You mould clay to perfection.
You tend the plant to fruition.
You save the petals from thorns.
To you, O Teacher, I bow.

You sacrifice for others
And make them grow beyond you.
You act as a role model.
To you, O Teacher, I bow.

You live frugal, simple life,
Enriching that of others.
You guard values and morals.
To you, O Teacher, I bow.

• The teacher has been held in utter respect in Hindu culture. An oft cited verse, in Sanskrit, about the importance of a teacher is:

“Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu
Gurur Devo Maheshvarah,
Guruh saakshaat Para Brahma
Tasmai Shree Gurave namah”.

[Salutations to that noble teacher who is Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Prameshwara, and who is verily the Supreme Brahman].
