RoE D4 Pt 16

RoE D4 Pt 16

Tom Ferguson and Kory Galloway were driving to the hospital.

“Have you thought of what you’re going to say?” asked Tom.

“That we’re looking for the boys wanted for questioning. What else would I say?”

“What if it turns out the boys at the hospital are your boys?”

“I’ll deal with that when I have to.”

“This just has the potential of turning into a cataclysmic cluster bomb.”

“Cluster bomb? Is that your professional analysis?”

“Call it a personal improvisation.”

Galloway parked the SUV and shut off the engine, gripping the steering wheel. “What if it is them, Tom? What if one of them is hurt?”

“Then you’ll deal with it when you have to.”

It was Ferguson who approached the desk and found out what room the boys were in. Galloway was trying to keep from shaking.

“They wouldn’t give us any information,” said the desk nurse. “That’s why we alerted the authorities and have them under guard.”

They got to room 12 in the ER and Galloway glanced through the curtain. He knew who they were with that first glance. Dean was laying on the bed with tubes going into him and a large wrap around his leg. Shawn was in the chair looking concerned. There was a guard standing in the corner.

Galloway leaned back against the wall and took several deep breaths as he tried to rub feeling back into his hands. Ferguson could tell that he was visibly stressed.

“You know, it could jeopardize the case if you go in there first alone.”

Galloway stood up with his fists clenched. “Damn it, Tom, those are my boys in there.”

Tom glanced through the crack in the curtain. “And now they know that you are out here.”

Galloway gulped. he was trembling and sweating but he entered the room.

Shawn stood with his back against the bed, his hands out to his sides; a barrier against anything that might try to get to Dean.

“How is he doing?” asked Kory.

Shawn’s lips curled in a snarl. “You just want to take us to jail.”

“I only need to ask you some questions.”

“You want us to rat on our friends.”

“I only want to find out the truth in this mess.”

“Like you wanted the truth when you threw us in Juvi?”

“That was for your own good....”

“Three separate times? That last time they were trying to bump us into the county jail. Do you know what would have happened to us there?”

“I had nothing to do with that. If I would have known......”

“You would have gotten drunk and told yourself it was for our own good. Most of what we got caught doing was just trying to survive on our own. We couldn’t rely on anyone but each other after Mom died.”

“I’m sorry. When Trudy died I didn’t know what to do with that pain.....”

“It’s too late for sorrys and explanations... We are our own men now. We don’t need or want you, not that we ever did.”

Dean started to stir. “Shawn? Who’s here Shawn? Is it Mom?”

Shawn sniffled in a deep breath. “It’s no one, Dean. Just go back to sleep.”
