Emily and John deal with an intruder
The Cabin at Night
WC 291

“I love when we spend the weekend at the cabin, John,” Emily said as they snuggled under the comforter.

“Me, too, honey,” her husband said and planted a kiss on her lips.

She loved skiing and hiking, but her favorite thing to do usually happened after dark.

“I don't care if it is in the middle of nowhere, we'll never sell this cabin, right?” Emily said, fishing.

She had heard rumors from John's attorney friend, Brad, that John was considering selling it, not that her husband had mentioned that to her.

“No way baby. Never,” John assured his wife.

They fell asleep in each other’s arms.

The sound of glass breaking broke the night silence.

John sat upright, “What the—"

Emily smacked her husband. “Shhh!”

She reached for the phone.

I'm going to call the police,” she whispered.

The line was dead.

“Where's your cell?” she whispered.

“Charging downstairs.”

“Mine, too.”

Now what?

John grabbed the baseball bat. Emily shined the flashlight on the lower level as they tiptoed down the staircase.

“There’s no one here,” John said after he had checked everywhere. “It does look like someone tried to break in, though.”

Meanwhile, Emily unhooked the charger from her phone.

“Maybe we should sell,” John said. “What do you think, honeybuns?”

Emily was busy checking messages: Hey buddy, I broke the window, so it looked like a real break-in. And I cut the phone line just like you asked. I hope it worked, and you can get her to sell. Let me know, Brad.

She had picked up John’s phone by mistake.

“So, honey, what do you think?” John asked as he joined her in the kitchen.

“Does Brad handle divorces? She asked as she handed John his phone.
