Burned

Almost out of breath, his endurance near its limits, the tiny scientist rejoiced when he heard Tommny's comments.

"Yes, yes," shouted the bug-sized man. "Look closer!"

Suddenly, Tommy directed the beam of focused light toward him again. Shocked, the speck-sized man called forth enough of his energy reserves for one last evasion.

"I am freakin' bored, dude," Joe complained. When he looked down, he saw only a itty-bitty creature beneath his notice and barely worth the effort it would take to squish.

Tommy urged patience on his friend. "I just want to get a closer look at it."

"Fry the bastard already!" Joe demanded in exasperation.

Tommy hesitated. On the tabletop, the tiny man looked up at his ginormous neighbor. "No! Don't listen to him!" The tiny man screamed as he tried to make his muscles move. "Please, it's me! Mr. Smith!"

"It's just a freakin' bug!" Joe reiterated loudly.

When Tommy moved the massive magnifying glass, the little man saw the wide glass lens begin to focus the sunshine, building up a fiercely focused ray of death that glided across the tabletop toward him.

"No!" He ran, somehow able to move his legs, only to find himself engulfed in the scorching light.

Blinded, he felt his body sizzle. "Tommy! Stop!"

The shrunken scientist stumbled out of the tightly focused beam, falling on hands and knees, smelling a scorched scent.

He felt an intensity of pain, but played his last card, hoping if he remained motionless, Tommy would figure he had succeeded.

"Happy now?" Joe said.

Tommy lowered the magnifying glass, squinted to see if the toasted bug was still kicking. The speck of a man realized that he had to remain motionless even through the torture. He didn't even want to see how he had fared from the instant spent inside the column of fiery light. His hair still smoked where the beam had burned it almost to his scalp.

"I don't know," Tommy said. "Something still looks weird about it."

Joe grunted in disgust and...
