It took immense willpower, which he didn't realize he possessed, to stand rooted in his tracks and face the oncoming wrath represented by his teenaged neighbor and the fiery magnifying glass of death.
He tried to find some trace of the friendly, eager young man he knew so well. Instead, his nerve began to fail when he saw Tommy's features twisted in disgust, his lips turned in an arrogant sneer and his eyes alive as he anticipated the imminent demise of something as lowly and utterly insignificant as a mere ant.
The speck-sized man took a deep breath and started to scream for the giant's attention when Tommy spoke first.
"LOOKS LIKE THE END OF THE LINE," the titanic teenager pronounced, capping the statement with a sinister chuckle.
The little man's eyes darted wildly, looking for cover or any other means of escape. He fastened his gaze instead on Tommy's bored, indifferent friend.
"Joe!" The little man screamed and waved. "I'm not a bug."
Tommy advanced the scorching stream of light across the tabletop.
"God, no!" Mr. Smith cried, his nerve failing him at last. "Tommy, please," he begged before he fled toward the edge of the table.
Suddenly, the beam of hot energy fizzled, faded and finally vanished.
"WHAT THE..." Tommy remarked in surprise.
He shook the magnifying glass, as if it was something as simply as a dead battery. Then, he noticed, that sunshine was no longer pouring through the kitchen window to power his incinerator.
"IF YOU WANT THAT BUG DEAD, THERE ARE EASIER WAYS," Joe remarked.
Hearing how his reprieve was so mercilessly short-lived, the tiny man flung himself on his knees. "Tommy! Joe! Stop! Look at me! I am not a bug!"
