Percy speaks as he moves ponderously towards the elevator. “I’m really into music, not sports. This bod’s a little slow for sports, but it comes with a great set of pipes!” He raps a bar of wordless sounds, his padded hands slapping his massive gut rhythmically as he waddles.
“Cool,” says Matt, beguiled again by Percy’s sheer size; the massive gut that rolls far out over the waist of the pants, the hugely fat pecs that hang down his chest and wrap around onto his back, the thick roll of fat on the neck beneath the fat cheeks. Matt also notices that Percy has added some personal things to his school uniform - big gold hoop earrings, a thick gold chain showing against the dark skin at the open neck of his shirt, and a heavy gold wristwatch. Percy’s tightly curly hair is shaved short on the sides and back of his head, making obvious the thick padding of fat on the back of his head that extends down his neck. Given all the heavy gold, Matt wonders if Percy’s parents are rich.
Instead of asking that, though, Matt asks Percy, “I don’t get it about this school - are the kids here all trying to get fat?”
“Oh yeah,” replies Percy. “That’s why the school exists, for guys who are fat or want to get fat. Most guys here are like me - I was a fat kid, and I wanted to get fatter. Don’t you want to be fat? Fat is hip, Matt - fat is in. Fat is Phat! I want to do hip-hop, and just look at the fat guys in that - I’ll be just like Big Pun - he did his best music when he was over 600 pounds. I’ve got the size, I’ve got the voice, I’ve even got the moves, now I’m just trying to be discovered.”
“600 pounds? Wow, I had no idea Pun was so big.”
“There are lots of big people in music, it’s just that nobody talks about them.”
Matt and Percy get to the elevator, and Percy inserts his key. As he turns the key...
