"Okay, that should be fine," Derek said. He responded to the directive given to him by Principal Franklin: He was to work with the primary section of the school's students on arithmetic and spelling. Having tutored primary school students while he was in the latter year of his middle school and into the first two years of high school, Derek knew what to expect and how to properly help younger students. With a smile, Principal Franklin waved Derek out of her office and to go find his room assignment for the day: Room 203. Ten minutes later, he was there.
"Good morning," Derek greeted as he walked into the room. There waiting for him was one of the primary grade teachers, Portia Caras. "Oh, good morning Derek," she responded with a smile. Mrs. Caras was a very joyful woman, standing at 5'4 with black skin, dark brown hair, brown eyes, and a very white smile. She was a bit heavy, but teased herself about it. This weight of hers ended up causing Derek a bit of trouble the first time they interacted, when by mistake she leaned on a counter where Derek was standing, smushing him under her belly. Since then, the two have laughed together about it. At the moment, though, neither person was going to bring it up, considering students were about to file in. Each of the teachers prepared the material and set up the desks for the students. Five minutes later and the room was filled with elementary kids.
"Good morning class," Mrs. Caras introduced, "I would like to share that we have a teaching helper today! This is Mr. Bates. I understand he's a bit smaller than us, but trust me when I say that he's very smart and helpful! You are more than welcome to ask him for help with anything you need." Derek stepped forward on the desk the teacher had set him on and waved to the class. "Hello! As Mrs. Caras said, I might be a bit small right now, but I can be very helpful. Always feel free to come up to me and ask questions!" Following the introduction, the class began. Mrs. Caras led the way with reading and Derek sat patiently waiting for arithmetic and spelling lessons to get going.
How does the rest of class go? Do any of the kids give Derek problems or are they well behaved for the period?
