Having no time to think about it, Newt jumped and grabbed hold of Kane’s rubber sole, just barely able to grip the top edge. Pulling himself up, he’d just grabbed the end of the shoelace when the giant started moving. The other boot lifted into the air, the reverberating boom distracting Newt from his climb as his head whipped towards it. Then his boot lifted, Launching Newt into the air at breakneck speeds. Thankfully, his hands instinctively gripped tight to the shoelace that was twice as thick as his thigh, keeping him from being flung off with that first step.
The boot rocketed through the air, the lace flicking about as Newt desperately held on. As the boot came down, the lace whipped forwards. With a crashing boom, the boot came down, Newt smacking down on top of the crisscrossed laces; the end of the shoelace slipping from his fingers to fall back to the side of the boot. Newt groaned as he recovered from the massive event that was the giant taking a single step forwards. Watching the other boot fly past, Newt realized what was about to happen, and quickly dug his arm under the laces under him.
Just in time, he looped one arm under a tightly bound lace and locked his arms together. When the boot lifted and shot forwards, Newt was whiplashed backwards, feeling like his arm would be torn off any second. Wind whistled violently past his naked body as his arm stayed wrapped under the lace. Finally, the boot came down, and once again Newt was flung forwards, jarring his shoulder viciously as his body slammed against the rough laces and beaten leather.
Unbeknownst to Newt, Kane was taking slow and measured steps as he surveyed his surroundings, keeping Riko in his line of sight in case something attacked. He paid no mind to the gravely dirt crunching mutedly under his boots, only being careful not to step on any twigs. The light of the full moon cast the area in decent lighting, especially once their eyes had adjusted from the fire. Aside from the rocks they were using for shelter, there wasn’t much out here aside from the waist high weeds and shrubs. Trees dotted the landscape, but nothing close or big enough to hide anything like a standing human. Any threat would have to be small enough to hide in the bushes, and Kane wasn’t seeing anything.
Below, it took everything Newt had to hold on. Every step the giant took was a torturous ordeal for the tiny man, leaving him too exhausted to do anything but try and recover each time his boot came to a rest. When the boot came down again, he just laid where he’d slammed down, muscles screaming at the abuse he was going through. He waited for the torture to start again, but it didn’t. then he realized one of the giants was talking.
“I found a shirt.” Riko called, eyeing the dark blue tee laying on the ground. They’d found Newt’s pants and underwear next to the hole he’d dug to go to the bathroom in, clearly painting a picture of what the man had been doing when he was attacked. Strangely though, there wasn’t any blood. The shirt didn’t even look torn up, just oddly damp. Liam came over while the other two stayed on alert. They both examined the shirt and checked the area for where their missing teammate might have gone. But there was nothing. Riko spoke quietly, “What do you think? There’s no sign of him.”
Liam looked hard at the shirt, trying to detect any clue it might provide. “Not sure. We’ll do the perimeter check, see if there’s anything left of him. if we don’t find anything in the next thirty minutes, we go back to our camp and check again in the morning. maybe we’ll see something we missed.”
“Doc said to bring back his body if he died. He won’t be happy if we lose the nerd completely.” Riko pointed out. Mouth turned down at the thought of the doctor and his experiments. None of them knew exactly what Dr. Stenson was doing with Newt’s body, but they’d all been taken to the side after they’d been assigned to this run. The doc had been clear that they were to bring Newt back, dead or alive.
“If there’s no body, then there’s nothing we can do. None of us expected an attack this early on, not like this at least.” Liam said with a shake of his head, also not liking the idea of dealing with the doctor. “There’s only so much Dr. Stenson can do, though. I doubt Carton knows what’s going on, the doc is always doing stuff behind his back. If nothing else, we can go to him if Stenson tries to make trouble for us.” With that, Liam walked back to where he’d been and told the others to keep searching.
Meanwhile, Newt had taken advantage of the brief moment of peace. Working his sore arm out from under the laces, he used them like a ladder to climb to the top of Kane’s boot. it was slower going than he’d like, his body still aching from what it’d been through in just the past five minutes. He was just reaching the top of the boot under the giant’s pantleg when he heard Liam order everyone to keep searching. Much as he appreciated the dedication, he wished Liam would have taken more time to chat.
