The Next Morning

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
When I woke up the next morning, I could see myself. Thankful that whatever had screwed with my reflection must have been temporary, I ran to the bathroom for my shower.

After getting myself clean, I went to towel off the mirror so I could brush my hair and teeth. When I did that, I was stunned: I still had no reflection. What's more, neither did the towel in my hand. Naturally, I screamed.

Mom came running, and knocked on the door. "JJ? Was that you?"

"It's me, Mom," I said, opening the door. "Something weird has happened."

"Well," she said, "come out from wherever you're hiding, and we'll talk about it."

"What?" That had never occurred to me. "Mom, I'm standing right in front of you."

"Cute, JJ," she said, stepping forward. "Now, stop with the jokes, and get... " And that was as far as she got. Because that was when she wound up putting her hand on my breast. "JJ?"

"Right here, Mom. I thought it was just my reflection. You really don't see me, do you?"

She shook her head. "How is this possible?"

"I've got a theory. For right now, get everyone together; I'll tell you everything I know downstairs."

Mom left the bathroom, and I went back to at least trying to do something with my hair and teeth. What was interesting was, whenever I picked up either my hairbrush or my toothbrush, it no longer had a reflection; when I let go of it, it reappeared in the mirror. I relied on muscle memory for brushing my teeth, but I had to guess how my hair looked in the end.

Back in my room, I held my clothes in front of my mirror. As long as I held them, they seemed to be floating in the mirror; once I put them on, their reflections vanished.

Deciding that I was as close to presentable as I was going to get, I started downstairs. When I got to the breakfast nook, Mom was explaining the situation. "I still can't believe I touched her like that," she said. "She was completely invisible."

"Does she know how it happened?" Dad asked.

"She says she has a theory."

"I hope it's not like most of the ones on her podcast; the precinct just loves to ask me if she thinks there are alligators in the sewers."

"Doubtful," I replied, half-joking; "the C.H.U.D.s would have eaten them by now."

"You startled me," Mom said. "Did you get dressed?"

"I did; but my clothes turned invisible when I put them on." And then I told them about last night.

When I finished, Dad sighed. "I always worried about your tendency to stick your button nose into trouble, JJ; but even I never imagined it would lead to anything like this."

"The first thing we need to do," Mom said, "is make sure that JJ is basically alright."

"How do we do that?" Dad asked. "It's not like we can bring her into the ER like this."

"I'll call Dr. Travers," Mom replied, already grabbing the phone. "Maybe I can talk her into making a house call."
