Chapter #4Dr. Travers by: BeeJay Dr. Travers came over within the hour. She had been my doctor since I was old enough to stop going to a pediatrician. She was five years older than my parents, with salt-and-pepper hair and bifocals. "We're glad you came, Doctor," Mom said.
"It's highly unusual," she replied, "in this day and age. Now, let's take a look at JJ, and find out why we couldn't do this at the clinic."
"I'm afraid the second part is easier than the first part," I said.
She looked around. "Where is she?"
"Right here," I answered. "I'm invisible."
"That's impossible."
"I'm going to touch your left hand," I told her. "You'll feel my fingers now."
When I touched her, she pulled her hand back and jumped. "How did this happen?"
"I got doused with some weird chemicals last night. I can see myself, but nobody else can."
"For obvious reasons," Dad said, "we want to know if she's alright."
"Well," Dr. Travers said, "give us some privacy. Just because you can't see her, I'm sure she still doesn't want you looking at her when she's undressed."
******************************
Once Dr. Travers was done, she called Mom and Dad back into the breakfast nook. "JJ's blood pressure is slightly elevated," she said, "possibly because of the stress of the situation. Other than that, she seems perfectly healthy."
"How are her clothes invisible?" Dad asked.
"I would theorize," she replied, "that her invisibility is created by some field, almost an aura, that is generated by her body. I asked her to put on the blood pressure cuff and the pulse oxygen meter; when she did, they became invisible; when she took them off, they reappeared."
"At least we know she's alright," Mom said.
"Other than being invisible," I added.
"How can we fix that?" Dad asked.
"I couldn't begin to speculate," the doctor said. "For that, you'd have to talk to the people who made the formula."
"And let's face it: If you made a formula that could turn people invisible, would you tell anyone? Or want anyone asking about it? And when they find out about me,... "
I didn't need to finish the thought. Figuring things out would take a while. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
