Laying on my bed, I toy with the electromagnetic inverter. I shrink and un-shrink the lamp on my desk. I really want to tell my best friend Rachel about the inverter, but that would be breaking the secrecy agreement with the lab I signed when starting as a research intern at EmEx. Also my grandpa would be furious. I trust Rachel though, and I can not keep a secret. I text her, telling her to come over to see a "mind blowing invention."
About half an hour later Rachel pulls herself up onto the windowsill and into my room. "Sorry I couldn't get here sooner, I was having lunch with my grandma. So what is this top secret invention you have to show me?" She smiles and bit her lip with curiosity.
"You have to promise you will not tell anyone," I say seriously.
"Of course," then after a look from me,"Cross my heart and hope to fly stick a cupcake in my eye."
I smile. I know I can trust Rachel, and mostly had her do it because I think she looks cute when she does the actions for the Pinkie Pie Promise. I pull out the inverter and show it to her.
"A universal remote, just what I always wanted," Rachel teases. "So what does it do?"
"Watch," I point it at my desk chair and fire.
Rachel gasps as the chair shrinks. "Dude, no way! A shrink ray." I nod. She walks over to it, bend down, and places it in the palm of her hands. "Oh my gosh, it's so little and cute." Once Rachel put it back I turn the dials and shoot the chair again so it returns to normal size.
I begin telling her about how it works and all the testing we have done, finishing with the test on mouse. "Pretty cool, right?!"
"It's awesome, can I try it out?" I hand it to her. First she tests it on the chair, shrinking it to different sizes, before returning it to normal. Then she shrinks my dresser. She picks it up and opened one of the little drawers. She giggles as she lifts up a tiny pair of underwear. "Do you think they'd fit?"
"Only if you shrank me," I say, slightly embarrassed that Rachel was going through my underwear.
"Would it be possible for a human to shrink?" Rachel bites her lip, a sign of curiosity.
"Well based of all the tests so far, theoretically it would be possible and fairly safe. However there is a chance the human physiology would be adversely affected by the procedure. I would have to talk to my grandpa some more, then we could run scenarios." I explain.
After a pause, Rachel says...
