Rachel has a mischievous , slightly evil, glint in her eyes which makes me nervous. "Why I'm I little worried about your idea?" I ask.
"I was just thinking we need a test subject to try the inverter on, and I know just the person," Rachel stats with a grin.
"We can't do that," I interject, alarmed. "Do you know how much trouble we'd get in if..."
Rachel cuts me off, "Michael Jones." I knew the name all to well. Michael had always been a bully, especially to Rachel. He pushed around anyone smaller than him. Michael was racist and had made some very nasty comments about Rachel's African American friend. Worst of all, he had sexually assaulted Rachel in ninth grade. She has every reason to hate Michael. I knew he had been on her mind more since he got released from Juvie one month ago.
Rachel hops up onto her feet, inverter in hand. "I've always wanted a tiny boy to mess around with."
"Wait, Rachel. Think about what you're planning," I say, blocking her exit from the window. "I know Michael is a terrible guy, but testing a potentially dangerous object on him? You are the better person."
"Oh, come on. You said it yourself. It is probably safe. I just want to have a little fun and teach him a lesson." I do not move, worrying about what would happen if Rachel got caught. "Please just allow me this one thing, don't you think I deserve it after all he put me through." I waiver and let her go past. She climbs back out my window and I follow. Rachel mounts her bike, waiting for me to get on mine, before pedaling towards the trailer park Michael lives in with his alcoholic father.
Rachel does not know exactly where his place is, so we just cruise around until she finds the one which has Jones on the mailbox. The mobile home is in a terrible state. The siding is fading, windows are broken, and the weeds are at waist length.
Just then the door opens and Michael comes out. Juvie appeared to have made him meaner. He had not spotted Rachel yet, and was just scowling as he yells at someone on the phone. Without hesitation she aims and fires the inverter at Michael. A look of confusion came over him as he rapidly shrank. Rachel went over to the spot, rummaging through the weeds before closing her fingers around the tiny boy. She places him in the palm of her hand. "Not so tough now, are we Michael."
Confusion and fear was replaced by anger. "What the hell did you do to me you bitch."
"Tsk, tsk. Yelling is not going to change your situation," Rachel says in mock sweetness. "I shrank you with an invention Jake and his grandpa made. It's finally time someone put you in your place you...."
