You stood tall in Isabella’s palm, trying to to wither under the intense gaze of your irate boss, and you honestly felt like you were succeeding. You didn’t buckle under the pressure of Diane’s stare, you maintained eye contact and you kept your smile.
Isabella did not.
Her hand holding you began to shake, slight enough for Diane not to notice right away, but you definitely did. The combination of both the subtle trembling of Isabella’s hand, as well as the layer of sweat that had gathered due to her nervousness made your footing incredibly unstable, and before long you predictably found yourself losing your balance and falling flat on your face.
But it didn’t end there, the same layer of sweat that caused you to fall also meant that you started to slide after falling, and before you could even attempt to stop yourself, you felt the rush of air as you plummeted towards the floor.
You spun head over heels in the air several times before finally landing on the ground with a pathetic slap. You were instantly pancaked flat by the force of the impact, facing the ceiling, or more accurately, facing the looming figure of Diane, who glared down at you past the swell of her chest.
Isabella, eyes wide, mouthed an apology as Diane sighed in frustration.
“Just… ugh,” Diane sighed as she held her head in her hand. “I’ll give you your assignment and you can hopefully make it through the next hour without another incident, ok Anthony?”
Struggling to reform, you listened intently as the incredibly experienced lawyer who you had just embarrassed yourself in front of laid out your assignment for the day.
1) “You will be studying similar cases to one I am currently working on, trying to find legal precedents that we can utilise to our advantage. I’m going to meet the client right now, but it needs to go smoothly and I can’t risk bringing you when you’ve proven to be so… accident prone. I’ll have Isabella take you to the bullpen before she reports to Mia for her assignment, your desk is on top of another intern’s desk so I hope you don’t mind sharing,” Diane takes her leave, and you are taken to your assigned desk to meet your new “desk mate”.
2) “Due to your lateness, all of our current cases have been assigned an intern already. So we will start you off with something simple, I’ll leave you here with our receptionist, Audrey. She should be taking some time organising our client database, so you will help her with whatever she needs,” Diane scrapes you off the floor and dumps you on the reception desk. You are immediately faced with the bored expression of the receptionist, Audrey.
3) “I’m going out to meet with an important client, but I forgot to pass a message onto one of the other partners, I need you to go and give it to them. You should view it as a chance to familiarise yourself with the office space, since you missed orientation,” Diane’s last sentence was laced with lingering irritation over your lateness. “Isabella, you’re coming with me, I’m sure Anthony here will have no issues making his own way to the partners offices, he is after all “just as capable of any other intern”, well now is his chance to prove it!”
Diane and Isabella take their leave, leaving you alone in the middle of the M.A.R office floor.
