Chapter #6

Little Orphan Judy

    by: ThunderX Author IconMail Icon
The next morning, Judy woke up and was surprised to see a bunch of beds in her room. She looked down at the floor which looked a little farther than usual. She rushes to the bathroom to look in the mirror. She couldn't believe it! She had become a child again!

"Get down here at once!" a female voice called.

Judy thought it was her mother with a cold. She rushed downstairs to ask her if she was okay. But as got downstairs, she saw a polar bear she never met before.

"What's going on here?!?" Judy demanded. "Where are my parents?"

"They're not with you anymore," the polar bear answered. "You had to be dropped off here at Miss Carol's Home for Girls."

"You're Miss Carol?" Judy asked. "And why would I be in an orphan's home? I have parents."

"No, you don't" Miss Carol replied. "Your mother died after you were born and your father was killed in an automobile accident when you were four. Remember?"

"That's a lie!" Judy protested. She knew her parents would be looking for her.

"You calling me a liar?" Miss Carol said.

Judy was about to answer when Miss Carol pointed at her own face.

"Look at my face!" Miss Carol said. "Do you think this is the face of a liar?!? I don't think so. All right, after breakfast, you have a list of chores waiting for you at my desk."

She took Judy by the hand and walked her to the lunchroom. A whole lot of orphans were miserably eating slop as Miss Carol glared at them. She showed Judy her seat and then left. Judy picked up the bowl of slop in front of her. It looked disgusting. She got up to ask for something edible. That's when she noticed two wolves standing in the doorway across the room, one fat and one thin. The thin one had a mustache and wore pants held up by a belt and a sleeveless shirt that didn't fit him. The fat one had a goatee and wore pants held up by suspenders and an open vest.

"There she is!" the thin one said.

"Get her!" the fat one said.

Judy dropped her bowl and ran for her life. She slammed the door behind her as she got out of the lunchroom. She was in the lobby. She saw the phone on Miss Carol's desk.

"I'm not an orphan," she said to herself. "I have to prove it."

She climbed into the chair, picked up the phone, and dialed her parents' phone number. She waited for them to answer, but when it stopped ringing, she heard a gruff voice on the other end.

"Hello?" she heard the voice say. Did her father have a cold.

"Dad," Judy said. "You have to come get me. Miss Carol has kidnapped me."

"Who is this?" the voice demanded.

"Judy, one of your two hundred and seventy-six children," Judy insisted.

"I don't know any Judy!" the voice said. "I never married because I hate kids!"

With that, she heard the phone slam in her ear.

"Time for Plan B: Uncle Terry," Judy said as she dialed her Uncle Terry's phone number.

"Brad?" the voice of a teenage girl said upon answering.

Judy looked puzzled.

"What? Brad?" she said. "My name's Judy. I don't know anyone named Brad. Where's my Uncle Terry?"

"Brad," the voice said. "You never told me you had a sister or an Uncle Terry. I'd like to meet them sometime."

"I told you," Judy said. "My name's Judy. J-U-D-"

"That's wonderful, Brad," the voice said. "Your spelling is very impressive."

"My name's not Brad!" Judy said. "It's Judy! Say it with me: Ju-dy."

"Oh, Brad," the voice chuckled. "That's the sweetest thing I've ever heard. Bye-bye."

"Sheesh," Judy said, hanging up. "Time for Plan C: my sister Violet."

Quickly, she dialed her sister Violet's number. Upon answering, she could hear radio music in the background.

"Congratulations!" a man's voice said. "This is Zootopia Radio and you're our fourteenth caller! Which means you've won five thousand dollars!"

"Wait a minute!" Judy exclaimed. "You're not my sister, Violet! Where is she? What have you done with her?"

"Sorry, caller," the DJ said. "Better luck next time."

With that, he hung up. Judy figured she'd need some help. So, she pressed 0 for the operator.

"Hello," a female voice belonging to the operator.

"Operator," Judy said. "I need to call Bonnie and Stu Hopps or Terry Hopps or Violet Hopps. I'm trapped in an orphanage and I need to get out."

"Hang on a second," the operator said.

After a long time, the operator finally said, "I'm sorry, ma'am. No one with the last name Hopps is in our phone listings."

"It's got to be there," Judy insisted. "It's spelled H-O-P-"

"I already checked," the operator said. "Anyone with that last name only exists in your imagination."

"No, they don't!" Judy protested. "They're my family and they're out there looking for me!"

The operator laughed. "And my father's the Tooth Fairy!"

"Marco!" Judy said.

"Polo," the operator laughed as Judy hung up.

Judy figured it was time for Plan E. She tried calling her friends, Nick, Finnick, Clawhauser, Chief Bogo, Gideon, Mr. Big, Fru Fru, the Ottertons, anybody. But no matter who she tried calling, same thing: a total stranger answered. It was like her parents, her brothers and sisters, her Uncle Terry, and all her friends never existed.

"How did I become a kid again?" she asked herself. "And how did everyone I know disappear?"

She had no time to figure it out. She decided to call the ZPD. Just as she was about to dial the number, without warning, Miss Carol took the phone away from her with her right hand and grabbed Judy's other hand with her left.

"What are you doing?" she demanded.

"None of your business!" Judy snapped, trying to break free of her grasp to no avail. "Now go away and leave me alone!"

But Miss Carol just stood there and glared at her. Then she slammed the phone on the receiver.

"If you're going to talk back to me," she sternly said. "Then you're going to bed without your supper."

And with that, she dragged Judy to bed. Judy couldn't believe it. Not only was she trapped in the world's worst orphanage, but all her friends and family had disappeared from existence. She didn't know anybody. She was all alone.

"Good night," said Miss Carol as she placed Judy in the.attic where a lone bed was. "Sleep tight and don't let the spiders and monsters and scary things bite."

She locked the door and left. Judy looked at the pillow on the bed. It was the same one she got from Stephanie.

"I wonder," she said.

She unzipped the pillow, took out the packet, and set it on the nightstand.

"Hope I return to normal tomorrow," she said.

Would it work?
