Time: 7:55 AM
In front of Sam and Stinky, hovering above the ground in front of the bookshelf, was the translucent figure of a girl their age, emitting a dim green aura around herself. In place of her lower torso was a singular, wispy trail that waved around even in the still air of the library. Her short, messy hair was complemented by a simple white tee shirt, and her face was lightly speckled with freckles, seen most prominently on her cheeks.
At the sight of her, Sam and Stinky stood silently in shock, eyes wide in sheer surprise at the sight of an actual, undeniable ghost. The ghost girl herself didn't seem to notice them at first, as her eyes were fixated on the shelf in front of her. Then, as she turned her head slightly in the direction of Sam and Stinky, the girl's gaze caught the pair of friends, and her eyes went wide in return.
Then, in unison, the three shared a shriek.
"Aaaaaahhhhh--!!"
"Aaaaahhh--!"
"Ahhhhhhh...!"
Sam and Stinky held onto each other as the ghost girl was taken aback slightly, and all three were trying to catch their breath.
The first one to speak up was the spiritual stranger. "Holy crap! What is your problem?! Anyone ever tell you not to sneak up on people like that? Geez..."
Sam and Stinky took a couple more breaths, then turned to look at each other. Sam turned his gaze back towards the ghost girl and replied quietly, "...S-Sorry?"
The ghost girl rubbed her forehead in mild frustration. "It's fine, it's fine..."
Stinky stepped away from Sam and closer to the girl, as if inspecting her. "...No way... you're actually a ghost! A real ghost!" Whatever shock or fear that was present before seemed to have dissipated rather quickly.
Sam was not so quick to adjust. "S-Stinky, maybe we should--"
"Is that really so weird?" the ghost girl interjected. "...Wait, is this your first time seeing a ghost in real life?"
Stinky gave a confused smile. "Uh, duh! You say that like seeing a ghost is totally normal!"
The girl blinked. "Huh. Well, then... I'm happy to be your first?"
"W-What are you doing here in the library?" Sam asked through nervous stuttering.
The girl just looked at Sam up and down and retorted, "I could ask the same for you. I thought school was out. That's why I came here, because I knew it would be empty. Or, I thought it'd be empty, anyway."
Sam began to relax slightly, as it was clearer to him that this girl wasn't of any serious threat. "Uh... well, normally, it would be, if... if you weren't in it."
The girl stifled a laugh. "Alright, smartass."
Epiphany struck Stinky's face. "Wait, Sam! I just realized. This is what you must have heard about! The person who came in must be this girl!"
Sam nodded slowly. "Yeah, that... that certainly seems to be the case."
"Wait, you two saw me?"
"Not us, really," Stinky clarified. "Sam heard a story about some girl who saw somebody come into the school building. And wouldn't ya know it, here you are!"
The ghost girl put a finger up to her chin. "Huh. Weird. I didn't see anybody." Her focus quickly shifted elsewhere. "Wait a minute... he's Sam, and you're Stinky?"
Stinky gave a hearty nod. "Yup! Nice to meetcha, ghost girl!"
The girl gave an awkward smile. "The hell kind of name is that?"
"Oh, it's just a nickname. What's your name?"
"The name's Eve," the girl answered. "Nice to meet you too, Sam and Stinky."
As proper introductions have now been made, Sam had no completely relaxed himself, just as Stinky seemed to have. He didn't say it, but his thoughts were pretty clear: this Eve girl wasn't of any concern, despite being a ghost. That sense of relief washed over him.
"Uh, Eve?" Sam asked. "That sound from before... was that you?"
"Sound? ...Oh, that. You guys heard that, huh?"
Sam and Stinky just nodded.
"Yeah, guilty as charged," Eve admittedly nonchalantly. "That just sorta happens from time to time."
"OK, but... how?" Sam asked further. "I mean, you're a ghost."
Eve shrugged. "Honestly? Beats me. I could never make sense out of it, either."
"Maybe you're a fart ghost?" Stinky suggested? "Like a ghost made out of farts?"
"Ew. I hope not," Eve said with a laugh. "That would suck."
"Were you a gassy person when you were alive?" Sam asked. "Maybe it carried over or something?"
Eve shook her head. "Nah, I don't think so. If I was, I never farted this much befor--"
BRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrraaaaa...
Suddenly, a fart ripped through the air, silencing Eve mid-sentence.
Stinky held back a chuckle. "Dang, that wasn't half-bad, Eve!"
"Uh, thanks?" Eve said with another awkward smile. "That tends to happen a lot. I can't really help it."
"What, like, at all?" Sam replied.
"Nope, not even a little bit," Eve replied back. "I'm honestly convinced my... ghost butt, I guess, it has a mind of its own. I never even feel it coming."
"Wow," Stinky said. "That's gotta feel super weird. I can't imagine not being in control of my farts."
"Eh, it's not that weird," Eve assured. "When it happens, it happens, and I just feel this sorta sensatio--...wait, did you say you can control your farts?"
Stinky proudly. "Absolutely!"
Eve stared blankly for a second. "...Uh, OK. How? That's like, a really weird thing to just be able to do."
"Stinky is... well, a Stinker," Sam answered.
Eve looked even more confused. "Stinker, huh? Guess that explains the nickname. Sorta."
Sam and Stinky looked at each other. "Eve, you've never heard of a Stinker before?" Sam asked.
"Should I know what a Stinker is?"
"Depends on where you came from, I guess," Stinky added. "Let me fill you in."
Stinky spent the next couple minutes explaining to Eve what a Stinker was and what they could do, as well as what it was that gave them so much gas in the first place. As Eve asked questions and Stinky answered, the girls exchanged farts amongst themselves while Sam occasionally waved his hand in front of his face, wafting away the building smell. At one point, he even took a single step away from the girls, though they didn't seem to notice.
As Stinky's little explanation came to an end, Eve summed it up by saying, "Sooo, Stinkers are people who have farting superpowers?"
"Pretty much!" Stinky exclaimed.
Eve couldn't help but chuckle. "Dang. Gotta admit, that's actually kinda cool. Man, I wish I could control my farts like that. Certainly make it less unpredictable."
"Maybe you can, with some practice," Stinky assured. "Ya never know until you try!"
Eve paused for a moment, as if considering what Stinky had said.
"Eve?" Sam interjected. "Do you... mind if I ask you something?"
"Go ahead."
"...How did you die?"
Eve fell silent, as the tone of the room shifted.
Stinky glared at Sam slightly. "Sam..."
"Hey, it's OK," Eve replied. "It's a fair question. I mean, I can't really be a ghost if I didn't die, right?"
"You don't have to answer," Sam clarified. "S-Sorry..."
After a few more seconds of silence, Eve answered--
