Carl's curiosity couldn't be held back any more after reading through Mira's profile. Someone had gone through a lot of effort with this and it was a prime opportunity to debunk something for views. He started chatting with this spider and was quick to discover that whoever was behind this was willing to go all the way. 'She' spoke like many other girls, albeit with occasional grisly details like talking about devouring a deer in the forest. After a few days a date was agreed upon. For obvious reasons she didn't want to show herself near any human spots. People were afraid enough of spiders as is, one of her size would cause a panic. Carl chuckled and played along, agreeing to meet her near her home in the forest. Not a word was mentioned about him making a video about this date, as he didn't want her to get cold feet.
He packed his recording equipment, already having a plan of action for this. Going by the photos on the profile, this beast would have to be the size of an elephant. There was no real way of recreating that with animatronics or an elaborate suit outside of involving a whole movie studio. So their tactic was probably to scare him so badly that he would turn tail and run before he'd get a chance to reveal that it was all fake. He'd been there before and it made for some of his most-watched videos. Staring down the horror and pointing a camera at it for a few seconds would often have the illusion come crashing down, followed by some folks either scurrying off or getting belligerent.
In the back of his head one scary thought did crop up. What if she was the real deal? Carl wasn't afraid of spiders, but one that big would definitely give him pause for thought. Nah. It was biologically impossible for a spider to be that big. He couldn't remember exactly why, but he's certain he watched videos about why bugs aren't bigger these days. Despite all that there was a noticeable pang of dread in his gut as he drove to the forest. What if he really had stumbled upon the genuine article? He laughs it off, parking at the forest's edge.
With a camera in one hand and his phone showing directions in the other Carl sets off. The coordinates she had given him guided him along a narrow trail only a few hundred meters into the forest. Dusk was already setting in and the trees around him seemed to get spookier by the minute. He shook his head, trying to stay focused on his recording. Any moment now there'd probably be an elaborate jumpscare and shortly thereafter Youtube gold.
There was a dim light ahead and the forest cleared. Carl was as ready as he'd ever be. Several trees were covered in large webs, the strands glistening in the fading light. Smaller branches had been partially snapped to further give the impression that something huge had done this. It was a very impressive effort he had to admit. But the one thing yet unseen was Mira herself. Were they hoping this scene alone was enough to send him running? They'd have to do better than a well-dressed stage to scare him.
