Chapter #6

Carl inspects the spider webs

A lot of work had gone into making this little glade look like the home of a giant spider, but what stood out most to Carl were the webs draped all over the trees. They shimmered and glistened just like oversized spider string would. He struggled to imagine how the people behind this trick managed to get them all the way on top of these trees.

"Well, I'm here, but so far not a giant spider in sight. But if you look closely, you'll see that these webs are just made of clear rubber or some other plastic. They look super real, but that ain't gonna fool me." He spoke to himself, commenting for his video. He walked up to the most central tree, eager to demonstrate his cleverness. He grabbed one of the thick threads of webbing and raised an eyebrow. "They've even covered the lower webs in some sort of slime to simulate the stickiness. I'm impressed." He chuckled haughtily. He'd seen through this illusion with ease. But when he tried to pull his hand free the webbing barely yielded.

"Really? Glue?" Carl's voice gained a tinge of panic as he tried to maintain his composure for the video. Right now it felt like a prank gone wrong. He tried to let go of the sticky strand, but his hand was stuck. Thinking fast, the man puts his camera down and grabs his pocketknife to cut himself free. But the webbing proved immensely tough. The blade struggled to cut through it and Carl was getting visibly upset. He'd probably have to go to a hospital to get this shit removed from his hand. If he ever found out who was behind this sick joke he'd have some very pointed words for them. He grumbled, cutting through the strand on the other side of his hand. He was nearly free when he slipped, the knife flying from his hand and his arms getting caught in several more strands.

"Dammit!" He cursed, trying to free himself. But at this stage he was hopelessly trapped. His camera was still on the floor, pointing up and recording. "Well, whatever sick bastard came up with this had better come on out before I take this to the fucking police!" Carl shouted into the trees, his temper fractured. His blood ran cold when he heard an ominous hiss in response.

The man turned his head as best he could, restrained in the sticky webs. From the corner of his eye he could see something large moving. Heavy taps on the floor came closer. The fading light of dusk made it hard to see but the long, chitinous limb approaching him was clear as day. Carl fought hard not to panic, holding on to his beliefs that this was all some elaborate trick.

"Well, looks like 'Mira' is finally here. Maybe 'she' can help me get out of this crap." He joked. But the limb did actually seem able to cut through the thick strands with ease whilst not getting caught on them. One arm was freed, but instead of releasing the other she pushed her date around, shoving his back into the webs, flipping him over so he could see her.

Carl's heart skipped a beat as he looked straight into the eight unmoving eyes of a gigantic spider. Her huge body covered in a rigid brown carapace. Elaborate markings covered most of her. Some might have even been drawn on as her version of make up. Her jaws moved intricately, large fangs gleaming right in front of him whilst all the other twitchy little parts dripped with some sort of saliva. Every detail was there. From the tiny scratches and scuffs on her exoskeleton to the strange bobbing and moving of her body. More and more the thought began to intrude that this might not be a trick. Maybe, against all odds, he really was looking at a spider the size of a bus. And he was caught in this monster's web.

"Well well well... You must be my date. Carl, isn't it? Do you call all your potential girlfriends 'elaborate tricks' before you've even introduced yourself, or was I just lucky?" She spoke bitterly. Carl's eyes nearly bulged out of his skull as he struggled to grasp that this huge spider just talked to him. Worse yet, she didn't seem very pleased with his commentary so far.

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Mira cuts him free

*Pen*
2. Mira wraps him up in a cocoon of webs

3. Mira leaves him trapped and scolds him

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
