"Okay. You've got five minutes," she says, conceding to Johnny's request.
"You won't regret this, I promise," he replied with a giant smile on his face.
"I've heard that before..." mom said, sounding slightly defeated.
Johnny lead the charge to the shed, with his mom walking behind him. It was clear this wasn't the first time Johnny had pleaded with mom for some help.
As they made their way through the back yard, Johnny noticed how bright the day was. The sky seemed bluer, the grass was greener, and everything just seemed like it was lined-up to go in Johnny's favor. He opened the door to the shed, and ushered his mother into the room that contained his latest experiment.
"So...?" he said, looking for his mom's approval.
She was quick to pick up on this,"it looks... interesting."
"Fair enough, mom. I know it doesn't look great right now, but I promise you it works. Shall we give it a shot?"
"You're sure it's safe?," she questioned, rightfully so.
"You have my word. Now, how would you like it if I understood and appreciated all the hard work you do for our family?" Johnny said.
Thinking it over, mom actually had a slight grin on her face. "If this works, and you could do that, I'd be the happiest mother on earth," she said.
"Well, let's give it a shot."
Johnny sat his mother down in one of the barbershop-style chairs and placed the metallic sensors around her head. He then moved over to the computer terminal.
"Alright... output from terminal one to terminal two... terminal two set to receive input... Output set to draw from this portion of subject A's brain... subject B will receive that here..." he said outloud to no one in particular. "Alright, mom. It's all set up. I'll just plug myself in and we'll be good to go."
Johnny hopped over some wires on the floor and plopped down on the seat next to his mom. He placed the sensors on his head, and looked over at his mother. She was giving him a reassuring look, which comforted him. Then, with great precision, Johnny initiated the device.
As the process started, Johnny felt a slight tinge of electricity run through his head. The whirring of the fans cooling the system seemed to drown out all of the outside noise. The sounds of the system processing information seemed to get louder and louder, until finally Johnny felt like something was about to happen.
His vision began to blur slightly, but he could tell something big was happening. Finally, when the system was reaching it's climax, all of the lights went out and the entire shed sounded like it had lost power. Johnny's head was spinning, he couldn't see anything and was wondering if he was just going through another failed experiment.
