The more you think about it, everyone seems busy today. All your friends are either with family or have plans this weekend. As you're thinking, the smell of bacon frying wafts into your nose. Your mother must be cooking breakfast. Well, since you can't think of any plans right now, you might as well head for the kitchen. After breakfast you could ask what everyone was doing today.
Once in the kitchen, you spot your mother at the stove, cooking bacon and pancakes. Megan sits at the table, texting someone with a big smile on her face. Ellen was also at the table, but she looked terribly grumpy. She must be sober. You don't remember any mention of Aunt Brenda coming, so she must be out of weed. After pressing the button at the bottom of the table, Megan picked you up and placed you on the table.
Once your mother brings the plates of food out, everyone looks up and starts eating.
"So...what's the agenda for today? My plans are totally free right now" you say.
"I'm meeting with someone today" your mother answers vaguely. Does she have a date? Alright, so you probably can't hang out with her today...that would be awkward.
"Me and some of the girls are having a team-building retreat this weekend. We hike up a mountain and stay the night." So Megan is going to be gone for the night, and probably most of tomorrow.
"I have to see...a friend today..." Ellen mutters. In other words, she's seeing her dealer. So wait a minute...
"You mean...no one can hang out with me today?!"
"Sorry little sis, the retreat is mandatory and no one else is allowed. I could try hiding you, but then you'd just be in my pocket all day and night. If anyone saw you, I'd get benched."
"You can't come" Ellen blurted urgently.
"Sorry sweetheart, mommy just needs a little time by herself today. But, how about this? I'll drop you off before my meeting, and pick you up afterwords. Which friend do you want to see?"
"Everyone's busy today too..."
"Oh. I suppose I could take you somewhere...on your own?"
"Really?!" You blurt out. Your mom never lets you out alone!
"Well, you are getting older. We can't watch over you for the rest of your life, so this should be a good experience for you. Here's how it'll work. I drop you off somewhere, and you NEED to be back there by the time I set. If you're late, we won't do this again. But if you make it back alright...we can do it again every now and then."
"Deal!" you shout.
