Chapter #4Jenn answers the door by: yugglopo   Josh finally made his way through the rain over to the Marshall's. He come up the front steps and rang on their doorbell. He hoped Kira or really somebody other than Jenn would be the one to let him in, as he knew she wouldn't be happy to know Josh was coming over to play video games with his sister. Even if she was starting to come around. He eventually heard someone walking to the door within the house and it turned out to be Jenn. "Hey Josh, what are you doing here, I thought I was supposed to come to your place later. No?" She asked, still having yet to let him in.
Honesty was something Jenn valued in their friendship, so Josh proceeded to tell the truth as always. "Actually I came for Kira. She wanted help on her homework and then we were going to play some video games."
"Oh." She said with a disappointing tone and a frown. But she finally did open the door and gesture for him to enter.
"Is she in her room?" Josh asked after walking in.
"Actually she's in the shower. The two of us were helping my mom bring in groceries and when he finished she ran out to close the trunk and she slipped and fell in the mud." Jenn explained while pointing to her hair as proof, which was still soaked from the rain.
"Well that stinks." He said before the two burst in laughter.
"You can come to my room though until she's out." Jenn said signaling for him to follow.
When they got up there, Josh took a seat on the edge of her bed. "So what should we do?"
"Well I finished making flashcards to study for the upcoming biology test just as you got here. Perhaps you could quiz me until Kira returns."
"Alright." He agreed. Jenn sat at her desk and handed him a thick stack of cards. "You did this all in one sitting?" He asked with astonishment.
"No, I've been working on them for the past week."
That surprised Josh even more since the test wouldn't be until the middle of the next week at the earliest. "Anyway, question 1..." He asked about 6 questions, all of which Jenn got correct. He loved the fact that she was so smart. That's one of the things he found most attractive about her.
"Do you want to try a few?" She asked in the interest of helping her friend as well as herself.
Josh declined, not wanting to embarrass himself because he still had yet to start studying. He kept on with asking Jenn questions about unit the upcoming test was based of off. He noticed that Jenn was getting annoyed with her wet hair. She was trying to keep it behind her shoulders, which presented difficult since she had longer hair. He thought about telling her of his power, because he was dying to tell somebody and he wanted to see if it would really work. He figured she would be willing to trade off her hair since it was wet. As the questions went on, he started to wonder what Kira was doing.
"You okay Josh?" She asked, snapping her fingers in front of his face. "It's been a minute since you last asked a question."
"Yeah I'm fine, sorry." He told her, not having made up his mind.
"Something wrong."
"No, no. I'm all good." He lied blatantly.
"Josh we've been friends for years. I know when you're lying, just tell me what's up."
He figured he would've ended up telling her eventually, so he just decided to get it off his chest. He went through the story from leaving school, to meeting the woman at the bus stop, to his good deed for her, and eventually her giving the 'gift' to him.
"Sounds like a load of bullhonkey." Jenn told him.
"I know it does." The encounter was so weird and I was just dying to tell somebody.
"I don't blame you. The story's actually kind of funny." She said with a smile.
"I keep asking myself though, 'what if the power was real?'.
"You're joking right? Josh it's not scientifically possible to..."
"I know, I know, but just tell me. If you could swap one thing with me right now, what would it be?"
"Josh come on."
"Just tell me." He said in a softer tone, taking her left hand in his right.
"Well, there's so many options. Right now... I would swap hair since it's stiff right now." She answered thinking alike with Josh.
"Done." Josh said and there was a surprising bright flash that filled Jenn's room. Once Josh regained his vision, he looked across from him to see that Jenn now had his shorter hairstyle in the exact same color he had! He remembered there was a mirror so that he could see himself in, if he looked past Jenn. Sure enough, he had a shade of black hair even darker than his brown which reached all the way down to his back.
"It... it worked!" Jenn said in disbelief.
"I told you." He responded, rubbing it in his friend's face. He had a feeling it would work.
He saw Jenn checking her new hair out in the mirror. "Something's off." She said before placing one hand atop her head and then one on his. "Yep, my hair's still wet. Yours isn't."
Josh realized that she was right when he felt the long raven colored locks on his head. He found them to be dry. "How could that be?"
"I guess since my hair was wet from I got groceries, it stayed that way since I was the one who did it."
"I'm not following." He said.
"Wait!" Jenn reached for her wallet within one of her desk drawers. Then she pulled out her school ID. "See, look." She pointed to her head in the picture. To his surprise, she had the same hair cut and color she was sporting at the moment.
"How could that be?" He asked, shocked with the change.
"I think everything's been altered to make this seem normal and like we've always been like this."
"So there was no point in swapping then?"
"Oh no, there was. Trust me. My hair will dry twenty times faster now."
"Well, I guess that's good." He said. "How long should we stay like this?"
"Just until my new hair dries, that should do the trick. I'll want it back then, though. I love my hair, just not when it's wet."
That was another thing Josh liked about Jenn. She had a confident about her look and didn't care about what others thought.
"So should we continue quizzing?" He questioned.
"No actually, I was wondering if we could make one more swap." She told him. "I want to swap _______."
