Chapter #3Dani's Room by: Storm "It's the closest room to hide in," Dad explains. He motions for you to follow him as he leads the way.
"What if she brings Mittens with her?" you ask.
"We'll worry about that when or if the time comes. For now, it's more important to get somewhere safe."
It takes you and Dad several minutes to maneuver through the carpet in the hallway to Dani's bedroom. The door is open and you both enter, panting from the exertion. Not surprisingly, you discover the bedroom a mess. Dani has left clothes--both clean and worn--strewn all over the floor, as well as various shoes, socks, underwear, DVD cases, homework assignments, and generally everything else Dani has brought to her room.
You and Dad pass by two enormous socks Dani had once slipped off her feet upon entering her room, only to leave them semi-balled up on the floor near the door. Much like the rest of her clothing choices, these socks are very colorful, albeit mismatched. One sock is black with green designs and the other is white with multicolored stripes.
Nearby is the desk your parents got Dani for her birthday a few years back. Her laptop is on top of it, as well as books and more papers--with no sense of organization. Across the plain of carpet covered in clothes is Dani's bed, unmade and with the blankets almost thrown off of it. Her closet door is open beyond the bed, and you can see what is likely her hamper, hidden under a mountain of dirty clothing.
"How will we ever get her attention in here?" you ask. Glancing at your dad, you see him frown and sigh.
At the same time, your stomach rumbles, and you notice you've picked up the smell of nachos nearby. Looking around, you find the source: a paper plate of half-eaten corn chips, salsa, and cheese. It was likely remnants from the night before, though.
"I hope we don't have to resort to eating from that," Dad says observantly. "But, on the other hand, that may be our only chance at food for some time."
"And we never went out to eat like we were going to," you add, remembering your lack of a meal today.
"Well," Dad says, inhaling deeply. "What to do now?"
*** ** *** ** ***
Dani sits at the table with Mittens in her arms, lightly petting the purring cat. Mom is inspecting the canister, which is now completely empty, when there are knocks at the door. Mittens perks up and then jumps from Dani before bounding off upstairs. Mom puts the canister on the kitchen counter and goes to the door.
"Hello, Mrs., um, Dani's mom," a teenage girl says when the front door opens. "We saw that Dani is back. Can she play?"
"Of course, Aliyah," Mom answers with a smile. She then opens the door to let Aliyah and one other friend of Dani's into the house. "Dani, your friends are here."
"Hey!" Dani says to them as she stands up from the table.
The girls break into unorganized chatter and make their way to Dani's room. Meanwhile, you and Dad have heard the commotion. You both realize that the situation is going to be even more complicated. Already, though, you have both made your way to... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
