"That must be a pretty exciting case." Maya remarked.
The spirit medium stood in the dining area of Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth's large house, where she and Phoenix had arrived an hour ago.
They weren't the only ones. There had been some sort of hazardous incident in the city -- details were scarce at the moment -- which had caused an order for the people living and working in a particular section of the city to temporarily vacate the area. The media was in an uproar, and the streets were utter chaos.
The region of the city in question included not only the Wright and Co. Law Offices, but also the classy apartment building in which prosecutor Franziska von Karma lived in when in LA.
As a result, Phoenix, Maya, and Franziska had traveled to Edgeworth's home on his invitation to wait out the incident.
At the moment, the prosecutor was involved with a rather important case, the day's investigation for which had only recently wrapped up. Edgeworth had taken it upon himself to personally care for several key pieces of evidence, which were currently resting on the table of his dining room.
"Indeed," Edgeworth replied to Maya's remark, "I suspect I will be rather busy this evening, working through everything the investigation turned up. Please, try not to interfere with anything, Ms. Fey."
"You got it." Maya said, nodding. "You'll be good too, right, Nick?"
"I won't touch a thing." Phoenix promised.
"Much obliged." Edgeworth replied.
Franziska was seated opposite the trio, idly reading through a book without much care for the three others in the room.
A short time later, once the group had separated to go about their own business, something unusual happened. A small and apparently broken machine, tucked in with the other evidence on the dining room table, whirred to life. On a small screen, it displayed a reading picking up four individuals in its active vicinity. This, of course, was the group of four currently occupying the house.
Two of the highlighted people on the device's screen were singled out, and the little machine made a soft humming noise for several seconds, like it was powering up.
The screen lit up with a flash, and when the display returned to normal, there were only two people indicated on the screen.
On the tabletop, before the device, a small tray wired to the machine itself rattled as two very small objects dropped into its centre.
This would not be immediately clear to any casual observer, but the device had singled out its two targets, and with a function that went unnoticed by the two others in the house, it had shrunken its targets down. They were now left standing in the device's tray, reduced to a size comparable to particularly small insects.
