You turn around and reach under the unbalanced stack of file folders to reach for the ray gun. As you pull it out, some of the file folders topple, falling off the table, spilling their contents. You turn around and brandish the ray gun in front of the two girls.
"Oh my God! He has a gun!" shrieks Tara, as she stretches her arms up to the sky, dropping her water bottle in the process. The impact of the fall causes the lid of the water bottle to pop open, the pale green liquid inside spilling out onto the floor.
"Relax," says Marcy, "that's not a real gun..." she says to reassure her friend before turning her attention back to you. "So? It's a toy gun..." she says, taking another sip from her water bottle, shuddering ever so slightly as whatever concoction that was inside was a little stronger than she had anticipated.
"No, this is not a real gun," you explain, "at least not in the traditional sense. This is a matter transposer that can manipulate molecular structure so that the bonding distance can be extended or compressed..." Both girls stare at you with a glazed-over look, and then look at each other, hoping that one of them just understood what you said.
A bit exasperated that you need to clarify yourself, you inject "This gun can grow or shrink anything it's pointed at." The girls say nothing, at first and then burst out into a fit of giggles.
"Oooh, I get it!" says Tara. "You must be one of those mad scientist types..."
"No, Tara," Marcy responds, "he's not wearing his white labcoat... and his hair isn't white or wild enough!" Tara high-fives Marcy and they both double over in laughter. Marcy then composes herself to address you.
"I'm sorry, I know I'm smashed..." she says suppressing a giggle. "Okay," she says putting her water bottle on the closest table, "I always thought it would be cool to be 6 feet even... Let's see if this works." She stands up straight, and looks over at you as you hold the gun in your hand.
"Okay," you reply, your heart beating faster as you fumble with the settings...
