The Psychology Paper

"Okay, I'll prove it to you," you say to the girls smugly, although having your own doubts. Sure it worked on the laboratory scale, but on a live person?

"Marcy, how tall are you?" you ask.

"5'11", she chimes in, standing up nice and straight, taking a sip from her water bottle. Tara looks on, rolling her eyes in skepticism of the matter transposer.

You walk up to Marcy, standing next to her.

"I'm 6 feet tall..." you say, Tara looking at you with some hostility, arms crossed. Undeterred you continue, "Now, Marcy, let's take off our shoes so we're both in bare feet so we can get a better comparison."

Marcy unhesitatingly slides out of her black flipflops, pushing them aside with her left foot. You follow suit, by taking off your shoes, an action at which Tara seems to cringe and shake her head. You do your best to ignore her disapproving facial expressions, and look down to break off eye contact. You're welcomed to the sight of Marcy flexing her toes on the cool laboratory floor.

Marcy catches you staring at her feet and playfully bumps her toes against yours. "Hi there!" she says giving a high pitched voice to her toes.

"Notice how I'm like an inch taller than her?" you ask, regaining your composure. Tara, looks at both of you and mutters acknowledgement.

"Okay..." you say as you begin the calculation, and punching the numbers into it.

"72 inches divided by 71 inches..." you say, audible only to yourself.

"1.014..." you say a bit louder, plugging that number into the user interface on the transposer.

You take a few steps back and aim the firing device at Marcy, and pull the trigger, bathing the room in a bright flash. For a brief moment, everyone pauses and waits for their vision to return.

"I don't feel any different," the tall redhead says, looking at you coyly.

"You don't look any different," replies Tara, glaring back at you, easing into a smile.

"Well, let's go back to back..." you suggest. Marcy walks toward you, and you toward her. Upon meeting, you both spin around, standing up straight and going back to back. Tara looks on, beginning to yawn, and suddenly her expression changes.

"It... you're... look.... I can't..." blurts out Tara, stammering on her words.

Marcy turns toward her friend and smiles. "Well, I guess I need to get someone to update the height on my fake ID... 6 feet tall! Doesn't that sound so cool? I mean it's only an inch... but wow. I'm 6 feet now!", she squeals, excitement building in her voice.

"Yeah, I guess..." says Tara, in a distressed tone "...but you were tall enough already."

Marcy smiles, reaching over and patting Tara on her head ever so gently. "Aw, it's okay, Tara, you'll just have to look up just a little bit more..."

Looking at this interaction, you begin to get the impression that Tara is a little jealous of Marcy's height. That could be an interesting topic for your psychology paper. What might even be more interesting would be a little role reversal and document the changes...
