Chapter #4

Erik and Kurt

"Bro? Brooooooooo! BROOOOOOO!"

Kurt grunted as he ignored his little brother's voice, loud as it was, focusing on the bicep curls he was in the middle of. He was well built for a sixteen year old, due to his diligence when it came to exercising and diet, and the fact that he played football. His red hair was cut quite short and close to his head, to make it easier to wear a helmet without too much extra matter getting in the way. He let the weight fall to the floor after his last curl, the sound attracting his younger brother to his room. Erik burst in, all smiles, stopping short in the doorway as the smell of his brother's active body hit his nose. "Woo! Yikes bro, can't you do this at the gym? It smells like a sock in here."

"No one's forcing you to hang out in here, shrimp." Kurt said with a laugh, rising to his feet and grabbing a nearby towel, pressing it against his face.

Erik chuckled and walked in, a look on his face that clearly said "I want to ask you something." Kurt ignored his brother for the moment, curious how long it would take before his brother just blurted out whatever he wanted to ask. Unlike him, Erik was short and stocky. He had a solid build but wasn't what would be considered fat, with the same fiery red hair as his brother but longer and with a splash of freckles across his cheerful face. He was as energetic as they came and moved around a ton, despite his size. The extra thickness probably came from his love of food; it wasn't surprising to see him with some kind of food item in hand. Finally, Erik quickly said, "Can Hiro come over and play? Please?"

Kurt pretended to think long and hard about it. Since their parents were away so often on business trips, Kurt had naturally slipped into a kind of parental role for Erik; not to the point that it ruined their relationship as brothers, but enough that, even when their parents were around, Erik tended to come to Kurt instead. "Sure, he can come over."

"WOOHOO!" Erik yelled, throwing his arms up in the air, before plunging his hand into his pocket and pulling out his cellphone. "Hiro, he said yes! Get over here!"

Kurt chuckled, watching his brother bound from the room. He was still only twelve, not quite at that tipping point where youthful innocence starts to congeal into teenage angst, so he could be a bit of a handful at times, but Kurt wouldn't have traded him for any other brother. It didn't take long before the doorbell was heard. Hiro only lived down the street so it never took long for him to arrive. Erik ushered him in, Kurt catching a glimpse as he moved towards the bathroom to take a shower. Hiro was quite a bit different from Erik. Where Erik was on the shorter side for his age, Hiro was on the taller side. Where Erik was thick, Hiro was skinny. Where Erik had shorter hair, Hiro's was longer and shaggy. Nevertheless, the two had been inseparable for years, since they met in elementary school. They both enjoyed the same kind of things and would often engage in friendly competitions to see who could come out on top. Mental games were usually won by Hiro, who was a bit more talented in the smarts department, where physical challenges usually favored Erik, with his stockier, more powerful build. Still, both boys had managed to surprise the other various times by winning a competition they were sure they had in the bag. By the time Kurt was done with his shower, both boys were already settled in Erik's room, playing some kind of fighting game.

The doorbell rang again, much to Kurt's confusion, as they weren't expecting anyone else to come over. Hurrying downstairs, he opened the door only to find a package left on the doorstep. Scratching his head, he brought it in and opened it up. Inside was a pill bottle, unmarked beyond a single instruction which read "Take one with your meal", and a note. Kurt read the note, eyes scanning back and forth.

"Revolutionary supplement! Take one with your meal and see INSTANT results! Not intended for those over thirteen, results may vary."

Kurt raised an eyebrow and crumpled the note up, tossing it into the trash. He dumped the pill bottle onto the table and broke down the box, tossing it out into the recyclables before pulling his cellphone out, calling his mom's number, which went straight to voice mail, and then his father's number, yielding the same results. Rolling his eyes slightly, Kurt left a message. "Hey dad, it's Kurt. We just got a really WEIRD package that had a pill bottle in it. You know anything about that? Is this some kind of weird gift? Call me back."

He went back inside and froze as he saw the pill bottle was gone, the cupboards opened, and the evidence of two boys making a snack left out on the table. Rushing upstairs, Kurt burst into Erik's room, both boys yelling at the sudden intrusion. "Did you two take that bottle?!"

"Y-Yeah!" Erik said, holding the bottle up. "There was only two in there though... sorry bro."

"We thought you left it out for us." Hiro said, blushing slightly, eyes cast to the side. "It looked like a vitamin or something..."

"Are you two feeling sick? Light headed? Upset stomach?" Kurt persisted.

"No... why?" Erik asked, taking a bite out of his sandwich.

"No... reason." Kurt said, not wanting to freak the kids out. "Look... if either of you two feel... weird, just let me know. And Hiro? I think you should stay the night."

"What really? Awesome!" Hiro said, lighting up at the invitation. Both boys high fived as Kurt left the room, examining the bottle. So long as the boys were feeling fine he wouldn't worry... but maybe there was some kind of clue on the bottle he had overlooked. Turning it over, he found, on the bottom, a symbol. It was a little hard to make out but it looked like...
