A mountain trail

by: Dancing Spartan Author IconMail Icon
“Hey, where does that go?” Brad asked as he pointed to a trail through the trees nearby. Penn looked at it himself before looking back at the map, trying to see if the trail was there. To his slight surprise, there wasn’t any evidence of such a trail existing.

“Huh, that’s strange. There isn’t anything,” Penn noted curiously, which only seemed to brighten Brad’s face even more.

“Oooh, then we get to explore!” Brad cried, his interest peaked now more than any other point in their trip. He then suddenly sprinted down to the trail through the bushes. “Last one to the end is a rotten egg!”

“Brad! Dang it!” Penn cried as he ran after Brad, against his better judgment in all honesty. That boy could be a real pain when he tried, which he always seemed to.

The good news was that it was pretty early in the day, so at least the path and everything that made it up was not all that hard to see. Still, they were still straying farther and farther from civilization, judging by the more unkempt the trail gradually became. However, as Penn made his way through, he began to see a structure just beyond the trees. Brad’s laughter began to die down a bit as he simply stood near the end of the trail, allowing Penn to quickly catch up to him finally.

“Got you!” Penn cried out as he grabbed his younger brother. “Don’t you ever do that again! Do you realize how Mom and Dad would have felt if you got hurt?!”

He ended up saying that a bit more harshly than intended, which was apparent in Brad’s rather hurt expression. Penn could only sigh. “Look, I’m sorry I yelled...just, please try to be more careful, okay?” he asked as nicely as he could. Brad’s face brightened just a bit.

“I’ll try to. Sorry, bro….” Brad sincerely apologized.

“Apology accepted!” Penn smiled a bit, letting the issue pass. He then looked back up at his surroundings and observed them. “What is this?”
