Choice 1:
A more typical dystopian future
You are on Earth. There has been significant advances in technology including transporter technology; colonization of planets, moons, etceteras within the solar system; and nanotechnology. Then everything went BOOM in a series of explosions throughout the solar system. No one knows if it was a war or a natural phenomenon. Maybe the solar system passed through a giant gas cloud which ignited. The majority of humans died and most of the survivors are altered humans. Tribes of ape men wander around enslaving every human they find. Cat women live in lairs of sexual immorality. Every city on Earth has been damaged but many cities survive, especially small towns that are nothing more than a saloon, blacksmith, and post office. Larger cities like New York are full of empty skyscrapers slowly deteriorating but within the rubble can be found a few pieces of the more advanced technology of the past. Communication with the colonies has been lost. You know that explosions also happened on the moon, Mars and Titan but you have no clue whether those colonies were completely destroyed or are currently thriving.
Choice 2:
The brink of interstellar flight
The whole solar system has been colonized but travel between planets is very slow. Scientists are experimenting with faster forms of travel including transporter technology that converts people into light so they can travel at the speed of light. This form of transportation is available to the general public but you have to sign a liability waiver because this travel is risky. In like manner, other technology such as nanobots are risky. Doctors use nanobots to perform system wide treatments that would otherwise be impossible but sometimes, those nanobots get mixed up instructions such as repairing a penis instead of a nose.
