The brink of interstellar flight

"You've heard about it?", your friend asks.

"Of course I've heard about it. I even got a letter inviting me aboard." They are building a colony ship on Titan and preparing it to go to Alpha Centauri. Scientists have visited Alpha Centauri but even at the speed of light, it's an eight year trip. A few scientists died on the journey. The idea that they are building an entire ship capable of being transformed into light along with hundreds of passengers sounds very dangerous.
