Mom sat up on the couch she had taken a nap on when we entered the waiting area. She turned from me to Cassandra, with a look of worry. "Well...?" struggling for words, she asked. "How do you two feel?"
"It feels weird, being my sister." after a pause, I said. "Her hair is short but its still longer than what mine was, I can feel it brushing against the back of my neck and it smells different than what I am used to." wincing, I added, "The extra weight on my chest will take some getting used to."
"That's why we decided on gender neutral clothes to start with." nodding, David said. "I can't get over this breeze on the back of my neck and the smell of my hair is different as well." he then winced, saying, "I too have an extra weight but I really don't want to think about it right now."
"The body swap was a complete success, Mrs. Mason." smiling, Larry said. "Your mortgage will be paid in full by the end of the month with the agreed monetary reward being transferred into your family account the week after."
"Both David and Cassandra are perfectly healthy." assuring mom, Gloria said. "Being twins, with similar interests and friends, they will have an easier transition and be able to return to a normal life much faster than other pairs might."
"Am I free to take them home?" hopeful, mom asked.
"They are free to return home." nodding, Larry said. "Just return here in a week so we can confirm that everything is working properly." seeing mom's worry increasing, he quickly said, "Just to be on the safe side."
Mom nodded, releasing a breath then turned to David and I. "Let's go home."
The ride home was not as quiet as the ride to the procedure with David and I quietly going over our daily routines to prepare ourselves for the transition. Again, it only made sense. In what seemed like no time at all, we arrived home where we were approached by the rest of our family. Dad seemed worried while Amelia seemed bemused and Melody seemed confused. "Dey change?" trying to understand what she was told earlier, she asked. "Dey wook da same."
I giggled at that then paused, wondering if that reaction came from the body or if I actually did it on my own. Sensing my thoughts, as David had chuckled, he said, "We'll deal with it one step at a time."
