A few hours earlier, Angie's Mother had gotten work off early for the day, and decided to clean out her house. First she cleaned the kitchen, then the bathrooms, and finally Angie's room. She vacuumed the carpet and dusted the window sills. she then began to clear off Angie's desk to dust it off, when she noticed a dictaphone. Why would Angie need a dictaphone? Weren't they useless to someone with a smartphone? she thought. Must be a gift from her grandparents. Angie's Mom finished cleaning the room, and went to her car to go buy groceries.
Before taking off, she noticed someone had just started mowing her lawn, it was Danny Anderson the boy who, a few months back, had asked around the neighborhood for anyone who wanted their lawn mowed for 15 bucks a week. Angie's Mom had agreed to this and has since had a decent lawn for over 2 months.
"Danny, it's nice to see you. Shouldn't you be in school?"
"Well, my school had today off so... I thought I'd get all my work done today. How's Angie? I assume she has school today?"
"Yes, Angie has school, and she's been good. She's been very outgoing lately with her friend Lucy lately"
"Well, that's nice."
"Yes it is, listen, Angie got this voice recorder that she doesn't need, and my house is currently filled with things my family doesn't realize they don't need" She giggled "Would you mind taking it and finding a better place for it? I have to go buy groceries to make my family something to eat tonight."
"Er- Sure, Thanks"
Angie's mom drove off, leaving Danny with the dictaphone. He inspected it for a second: nowhere for batteries to go, and a message about wishes coming true... He then listened for past recordings There was only one. "My name is Angie" it repeated. Obviously the voice was in fact Angie's.
The bus drove by and dropped off Angie. Danny waved to her as she ran to the house. It seemed like she was holding back tears. She ran into the house and shut the door. Wonder what happened to her... Danny thought. He looked down at the dictaphone. Maybe I'll make a reminder to ask her about it. He pressed the button and spoke to it and said: "I'm going to find out what Angie is upset about" he paused. He waited a few seconds and suddenly he could hear a faint popping sound and his head started spinning a little. His mind was being filled with visions of being at a school. Being talked down to and bullies by some 6' chick who was a total bitch. He was seeing all of this through someone else's point of view: Angie's. He saw visions of the rest of her day, riding home on the bus and running to her room and started sobbing.
When it was finished, Danny took a few breaths and looked back at the dictaphone. Wait, did this just do that? He pressed it again and said "I am done mowing the lawn and the rest of my work is done for the day." He heard the popping noise again and suddenly the lawn was perfectly cut. He looked at the neighbor's lawn which was now also perfectly mowed. It worked. but Danny needed more proof he held the button again and said, "Angie is no longer upset and doesn't care about anything that that one bitch said or will ever say at school."
A minute passed and finally, Angie opened the door and came outside to talk to Danny. Danny looked at his hand holding the dictaphone. I should probably hide this. He put it in his back pocket.
"Hey, Danny thanks for mowing our lawn again." Her eyes were still a little red and puffy from crying a moment ago.
"Hey, Angie! no problem... listen, are you... okay?"
she looked down at her feet. "yeah, I just... had a rough day at school, but I'm over it now. I just feel... happy."
"Well that's nice" he said awkwardly as he was thinking more about how a dictaphone had just changed reality than asking a girl how she was feeling. "Is something else bothering you?"
Well, I just... lost something very important in my room and I can't find it. This always happens when my mom cleans my room."
Danny knew that she was talking about the dictaphone. Danny wondered if he should give it back or maybe share it with her, or if he should just keep it.
