You reach into the hatch, and remove the machine's portable core. This was an aspect of the machine you were particularly proud of. During the initial design sketches, you had planned on the machine being exclusively a stationary unit. This caused lots of problems. Anyone you wanted to switch with would have to be tricked into the garage somehow, and the less familiar the victim, the harder that would be. The easily removable core also served as a great way of disabling the machine when you weren't using it, assuring, so long as you hang on to the core, there would be no unauthorized access.
A few kids from school were having a party tonight. You knew they didn't really want you there, but they extended an invitation to your out of pity. You could take the device with you and pick out the body of someone you really envy.
You weren't planning on going to the party, though, so you agreed to babysit for the neighbor. You could get out of it if you wanted to go, but you might find some interesting test subjects there.
With a little more work on the machine, though, you could really open up your options. You had started working on a program that would let you connect the machine to the internet. Then you would have the potential to switch bodies with anyone, anywhere in the world. You hadn't quite ironed out the details of how it would work, or what the limitations would be, but this would make the entire world your playground.
