As the three browsed through town, Lucy spotted a bakery with a large clearance sale sign nailed to the top of it. Intrigued, she and the others headed on inside, where they were promptly greeted by the baker. "Hello, young lady! What can I get you and your friends there?"
"Hi! We saw outside that you're having a clearance sale?"
"Oh my yes. We're changing locations so everything's 75% off."
Upon hearing this, Lucy's eyes immediately lit up as she quickly proceeded to run every which way and grab all her arms could carry from the shelves and everywhere else in between. Meanwhile, Natsu looked around and saw another sign about an eating challenge. "There's an eating challenge going on?" asked Naruto. The baker laughed and said, "Well, there would have been; I even just finished cooking all the platters for the challenge. Unfortunately, both competitors were training beforehand, and I guess gave themselves bellyaches before they could compete. Too many lightweights, young man. At least it looks like you seem to appreciate a good meal here or there," he noted, pointing towards Natsu's bare stomach, which had deflated considerably since breakfast at Lucy's, but still had a hint of roundness forming where his abs used to reside.
Laughing, Natsu patted his stomach proudly. "That I do! Definitely more than THIS lightweight!" He said with a toothy grin, pointing towards Gray, who glared back angrily and snapped back with, "Laugh it up, you flaming moron! We'll see whose laughing after I kick your ass at that regional eating contest!" Hearing this, the baker leaned in intrigued as the two were head to head as per usual and said, "You mean that big eating contest taking place a few days from now? Why wait then when you can settle your squabbles now?" Both mages turned to the baker curiously. "Afterall, I DID just finish baking all kinds of entrees for an eating contest two other guys weren't man enough to show up for. Maybe you two are."
Glaring back at each other, the two grinned competitively. Lucy and Happy returned with a comically massive pile of various baked goods, ready to pay, only to see no one in sight. "Happy, where is everyone?" she asked, struggling from the weight of everything she was carrying. Happy looked around and saw Natsu and Gray at a table with an eating challenge sign at the front of it. "They're having an eating contest again." The struggle was too much, immediately Lucy's pile collapsed on top of her and Happy. Digging themselves out, Lucy glanced to see the two indeed about to have an eating contest and smirked as she said, "Good. Maybe a little competitive edge is just what those two idiots need."
The baker returned to the table carrying two platters, each one with five freshly baked apple pies on them each. The sweet aroma filled the nostrils of all four residing in the bakery as he brought them down before Natsu and Gray respectively and said, "The rules are simple: whoever can finish all their food the fastest wins. The winner shall receive a weeks worth of baked goods on the house when we open in our new location tomorrow." Hearing this immediately fired up both Natsu and Gray as they grabbed their forks and knives and immediately proceeded to ravenously dig into their pies. The baker chuckled and said, "Well...umm, begin?" and stepped aside.
Both Natsu and Gray intently wolfed down big heaping forks full of pie crust and caramel sauce laden apple slices within the crust, taking big hearty mouthfuls, chewing down the pastry treat and gulping it down before immediately going back for more. It only took the two a few minutes to completely demolish their first pies. Within seconds, they were already sticking their forks into their second pies.
Lucy and Happy watched with amazement as the two took big massive chunks of pie with their forks, sometimes big enough to be a tiny slice of pie itself and immediately open wide and stuff it right into their eager maws. Much to her amusement, both continued to stare down intently as they occasionally glanced back at each other and exchanged a few choice insults, then resumed stuffing their faces.
By the time their second pies had been reduced to crumbs...
