Chapter #6

Which wily wizard will win with wild wonders?

    by: Nomnom7 Author IconMail Icon
Immediately after embarking on your journey, you quickly set about bringing it to an end. You wanted to be able to spend your time training and learning, not looking for someone to train and teach you. As such, you began displaying what skill you did have in performance-like situations. You helped a pet out of a tree in a fanciful display of levitation, with a few harmless shimmers and sparks added in. When asked to light a small fire, you lit a huge, yet contained, one without any fuel. You certainly attracted quite a bit of attention, and for a while you considered hosting an actual show to entertain folks, while also bringing in some revenue to buy your way into an apprenticeship. You decided against this, however, as you were afraid that people would shift from thinking you as an impressive rookie, to a shallow conjuror of cheap tricks. Heck, you were already running a significant risk of that with what you were already doing, and began having second thoughts about luring invitations to yourself rather than seeking out a mentor. You figured that even if you managed to attract some wizard, he might only wish for you to entertain him.

These fears proved to be at least partially for naught. Apparently, you managed to impress the right person at the right time, as within a month of your partial-performances a courier addressed you, with a message directly from the royal court. It instructed you to show up with rather oddly specufic directions as to when and where, down to the second and inch, for an apprenticeship. While said instructions were slightly discomforting, more-so than this was the idea of who exactly was summoning you, as the message stated that it was from simply the royal palace.

Now, what you, and just about everyone else, knows about the palace is that it is ruled by the fledgling king Stephen the First. Unlike most arrogant kings of this age, Stephen understood his newness and thus hired the three men that he considered wisest for him to consult with. Them actually being the wisest is something much debated over, however, as the three are quite different from what most people would consider wise, atleast from the rumors about them. The disconcerning part about this situation was that all three were dabblers in magic, and the chances are that one of them requested your presense.

The first of the three is likely the only one that could be considered wise, due to his age, though it would seem that he never acts like it. Merlan(No relation to any wizards of legend) seems to be quite hot-headed, even going so far as insulting his employer during their frequent arguments. Outwardly, he would generally seem to actually be quite wise, judging from how he positions himself, and the discerning look that the goggles he alwats wears gives him only adds to that.
The second of the advisers goes by Jade O'Conner, and he dons a rather peculiar garb the likes of which's color matches the stone of his first name's namesake. His long, light brown hair in addition to his dress-like clothing has gotten him mistaken for a female on more than one occasion. Garments aside, Jade wouldn't be one that you would quite consider wise, due to his relatively young age. His remarkably expansive intelligence and his unsettlingly calm and cold manner of acting would contradict this, however.
The last advisor, Henry Pluss, has the direct opposite attitude, however. While Jade's calm aura cracks quite often to give way to the occasional quip or witticism, Henry's consistent smile is said to never leave his face. He is arguably the strangest of the group, bearing an attitude of joy in any situation. He also remains the youngest of the group, though one wouldn't guess it from his pure, white hair.

Which one of these wished for you, however, was something you would have to find out when you got there.
