Dr. Wills pointed at Cindy. “M-me?” asked the petite redhead. “Why me?”
“You were closest to me,” said Dr. Wills with a little shrug. “Go sit on that thing.”
The thing she pointed to was a box, made of material that appeared to be stainless steel, but a medium blue in color. The box was about the size and shape of a refrigerator with a Tesla coil emerging from the top, and attached to one side was a metal triangle, parallel to the ground. Cindy presumed she was supposed to sit on the triangle as if it were a stool -- she did so, although it was a bit too low and small for comfort.
“Now --“ Dr. Wills started to say something, but instead part of the box shimmered as if it were liquid metal, and a cap at the end of a mechanical arm emerged, extending itself to rest atop Cindy’s head quickly enough that she didn’t even have a chance to try to move out of the way. Sounds seemed to be coming from inside the box -- squeaks, clicks, and pops in no discernible pattern. The cap clamped itself to Cindy’s head with an audible “clank,” causing her and everyone else to wince.
The box began humming, and the lights in the room dimmed a bit. The other noises continued for a few seconds until a squeak was cut off in the middle, and instead a female human-sounding voice said, “Brain scan complete. Device language has been changed to match subject.”
“Oh, wow,” said Brett, highly impressed with the technology.
Liz asked, “So is that thing voice-controlled or --“
She was interrupted when the voice from the box spoke again. “Subject now being transformed to perform the following preprogrammed function...”
