Eric stood on the edge of a cliff. It was a breathtaking sight. To the North were forests full of game to hunt and eat. To the South was a lake filled with fresh water and fish. Towards the East was the rising Sun and towards the West was the cave where Eric lived with Esmerda, his mother. However, Eric didn't see this beauty. All that he saw was the monster he'd been for twenty long and painful years. Oh there were a few nice things, like the joy of flight, which always helped him out a bit, not to mention breathing fire and being capable of doing a few other things. But he longed to become human again. In his eyes he was ugly, the long horns on top of his head reminded him of the images he'd seen of the Devil. His long and narrow body was that of a Serpent, like one of those who tempted Eve in the garden of Eden. His wings were like those of a demon he'd seen in woodcuttings, and his claws and teeth were like those of a lion he'd heard about, only far larger. As for his scales, they were as black as those of the dragon who had cursed him. The only good thing about his transformation was the fact that he was still male, as Esmerda had told him that he could of been turned into a female dragon.
At the moment, he was unhappy. He and Esmerda had been in another argument, one in which he was told to watch over his younger siblings, who were created in one of two ways, either by Esmerda having sex with another dragon, or by a process similar to how he'd been turned into a dragon, in which the soul of a dying dragon was removed from its body and placed into an unfertilized egg to be reborn. However, he wanted nothing to do with the caring and raising of dragons, especially considering what they did to him and others. However, Esmerda had one major advantage, she had his human body. On more than one occasion she had threatened to either tear it to pieces, or roast it, or just plain eat it, unless he did as she asked. This time she had actually put it in her mouth and was about to swallow it when Eric had reluctantly given in. After that, she had spat the body out and hid it, like she always did, with a smirk on her face.
Of course, there were times that she was nice to him, like when he had a fever when he was starting to develop his fire lungs and he was having trouble using them or the time he'd broken one of his legs in a bad fall and torn the skin on his wings when he was just starting to fly, and a few other times. But by and large, he hated Esmerda for what she did to him. He wanted to kill her, but if he did that, his human body would remain hidden for all eternity.
"I can't live my life like this," he thought. He looked down and saw a large pointed sword-like rock. "If I jump off this cliff and don't use my wings, that rock will spear me and I'll be dead." Then, he shook his head and said to himself, "No, that's suicide, and God punishes Suicides."
Suddenly, Eric heard a sound. Looking in the direction he heard the sound, he saw....
