When Jack walked off the soccer field, Tommy, one of the other foxes on the soccer team, sat down on the metal bench next to him.
"Hey, Jack! You were great out there on the soccer field! You're really fast, you know that?" Tommy said.
"Oh, thanks dude!" Jack grinned, as he took a sip from his water bottle. "I appreciate that!"
"Listen, mate... I was wondering... Coach Jones had asked me to sign up for the track and field team as well, since he needed a few new guys to fill in some positions. Since you're pretty fast and quick, why don't you try out for that? I think you'd be pretty good!" Tommy suggested.
"Well, I can certainly run! I mean, if that is all I need to do..." Jack shrugged.
"Absolutely! You go to the track, you line up and you wait for the gun shot and then you run as fast as possible! You stay in your lane and you blast past all the other guys until you see the Finish line! You cross the line and you check your time! That's all there is to it!" Tommy explained. "Plus, I'll be running, too! We only got two guys on the team and we need a fox like you! Why don't you come to the try-outs, which are tomorrow afternoon at the track?"
"I will!" Jack decided. "I'll be there!"
Jack left the soccer field and went home right away. he had some soup for dinner and then he did his homework before he went to bed. The next morning, he got up early and worked out using the snall weght bench in his basement before he showered and got dressed so he could catch the school bus to school. As soon as he arrived at school, he put his books in the locker and he went to class. After class was over, he went to the track, which was just outside the large football stadium. The large track actually circled around the large football field and ran just outside where all the bleachers were.
Tommy was there waiting for Jack, wearing just his shirt and shorts and his running shoes, and he introduced Jack to Coach Jones. Then, the coach took his whistle and told the five boys to get in the start blocks and to line up.
He blew the whistle and the boys were off!
Jack ran as hard as he could, blasting out of the start block with a roar! He raced down the track in a burst of power, cruising down the tracks as the people in the bleachers were looking on. Jack was already passing the 100 meters... 200 meters... 300 meters... And the distance between him and Tommy, who was the next person behind him, was increasing even more, while the other three boys were much farther behind him. At 400 meters, Jack was almost 10 seconds ahead of Tommy and when he crossed the finish line, he was 16 seconds in the lead over Tommy and the other three boys!
"Very good, Jack!" Coach Jones smiled, as Jack crossed the finish line. "Your time is 36.71 seconds! Breautiful time! Tommy is second behind you! I'm proud of you guys!"
Jack and Tommy both smiled, knowing that they had both qualified for the top two positions on the track team for sure! He was glad that he made the team, with his friend.
Jack and Tommy then went to the snack bar to get some cold water to drink, before they walked back to the locker room to change. Their first track meet with another school would be in one week!
