A few days went by, when Jack was home busy studying hard and writing a paper for school. He was hard at work, looking up information on his laptop for a research paper, when Tommy called him on his cell phone.
"Jack! Remember, we gotta get up at 5 tomorrow to meet at Wakulla Springs at 6 for the race in the woods! It's the 5K race against the boys from River View High School!" Tommy said over the phone.
"Oh, yeah! Well, I'll go to bed early so I'm well-rested for the 5K tomorrow!" Jack said.
Jack went to bed and set his alarm, which woke him up promptly at 5 so he jumped out of bed and slipped into his running shoes and jersey. he then got on his bike and biked over to the park, where he met Tommy. The boys lined up and the flag pole, along with fifty other kids from several other schools, all ready to run in the 5K run in the woods!
The referee shot a gun into the air, and they were off!
Jack and Tommy dashed ahead of the rest as they ran over rocks and into the woods, where they had to run over tree branches, wooden sticks, rough gravel, paved roads, grass, and dirt. They ran uphill and then on a steep downhill incline, going up a mountain and then by the edge of a lake. They ran into the woods and then through a small forrest, surrounded by tons of tall trees and bushes everywhere. They had to follow trees and marked signs, indicating which way to turn and where to go. The worst part was running uphill over a long stretch of rocks, since the road was slippery and didn't allow for anyone to run very fast at all.
Thanks to their teamwork, their perseverence and discipline, Jack and Tommy worked together and remained ahead of the pack! They were numbers 1 and 2 the whole time, beating out runners from all the other schools!
After about thirty minutes, Tommy and jack crossed the finish line! They won! They were greeted by the scorekeeper and the referee who awarded them a certificate and gave them something to drink. They also received a ranking for their efforts in the race!
"Dude! We won!" Tommy said to Jack.
"Yeah... we can now look forward to the next one!" Jack smiled. He was already looking forward to the next competition....
