My eyes went wide when I saw it was Nikki who opened the door instead of Sam. We hadn't spoken since that night, and I didn't think we ever would again without my cousin was a buffer.
Nikki must've thought the same thing because I'm pretty sure her expression mirrored my own. She hadn't been expecting me and had frozen up like a statue.
I gulped nervously and waved awkwardly. "Hey...?"
"Hey...?" her greeting was just as awkward as mine.
I tried to look past her into the house to see any sign of Sam but didn't. Either she was deeper in the house or just wasn't home. If it was the latter, then that meant no was going to save us from this awkwardness.
"Uh..." I rubbed the back of my head. "Is Sam home?"
"N-No... uh, she got a promotion at work at works longer hours now." Nikki answered.
"Oh..." the atmosphere was so thick with awkwardness that I could practically cut it with a knife. How was I supposed to approach of conversation with Nikki after a drunken one-night stand with her?
I thought about the remote and what I originally came here to do. I wanted to patch things up with Sam and have a little fun, but she wasn't home because of her promotion.
Nikki was here though but everything between is so awkward and uncomfortable now. Maybe I should just go and spare us both. Or... the remote felt heavy in my pocket now, maybe I should try and patch things up with Nikki first.
She was my cousin's partner after all and that meant that I couldn't just avoid her. Sooner or later, we were going to have to talk to each other whether we wanted to or not.
Yes, I came here to make things right with Sam, but that also means I have to make things right with Nikki too. Okay, I can do that. I can make things less awkward between us, right?
I must've been lost in thought for too long as the silence must've been too much for Nikki to take. She quickly blurted, "Would you like to come in! I-I mean if you're not busy or anything."
She just invited me in. This was my chance. I can do this. I can do this! I. Can. Do. This! I looked at the open entrance before me and felt my resolve waver.
