Despite any reservations I might've had I nodded and accepted Nikki's invitation. "Sure, I've got nothing going on right now."
I stepped forward and Nikki stepped aside to allow me access to her happy home. Behind me I could hear the door shut and the sound of the door locking was like a shotgun blast in my ears.
In fact, I could hear my heartbeat thumping in my ears as well.
"Don't forget to take your shoes off at the door." Nikki reminded me. Oh yeah, I did forget. I knelt down to loosen my laces as Nikki walked past me and I briefly noticed she wasn't wearing any slippers or socks as she made her way across the hardwood,
I eventually got my sneakers off and placed them by the door. From the kitchen I could hear a kettle going off and saw Nikki going to attend to it. "I was making coffee..." I hear her call. "Would you like some?"
"Thanks! Uh, that would be great." I answered back as I trekked towards the living room. It had been some time since I last sat down in here and I was happy to see Sam still had that long tan couch that I liked so much.
I took a seat and sunk into it just like I used to when I would visit. God, I missed this couch. I then noticed the glass coffee table in the center of the room. That was new.
I was pulled from my thoughts by the sound of footsteps against the hardwood and saw it was just Nikki coming back holding two coffee mugs.
"Three teaspoons of sugar, creamer, and milk." she smiled awkwardly as she placed my mug down on the coffee table. I was a bit surprised, she remembered exactly how I liked my coffee.
"Thanks, I didn't think you remembered."
Her lips fell into a thin line as sat down beside on the couch in silence save for her taking a sip of her coffee. Things had become incredibly awkward again. This was stupid. We were both adults. Why couldn't we just talk without this dark could hanging over us?
Oh that right, because she was married to my cousin and we both had a night of passion after getting wasted at a bar.
Damn it!
"Nikki-"
"Matt-"
We both began at the same time, cutting each other off in the process. Goddamn it! Why can't I just have a normal conversation with this woman? I want to make things right! Fix things! Why does this have to be so awkward?
