Hannah hears Luis's voice. "Um, Hannah, I'll be down.. soon. Can you wait outside?"
Hannah swallows, surprised at a slight feeling or irritation. Why can't I just wait here? Nevertheless she shrugs and calls back, "Okay.. see you, Maria." Luis's mom waves and Hannah steps outside of the house, sinking down onto the hard, concrete steps.
She pulled out her phone to text a couple of her friends, Kelly and Alicia, tapping in the details of the 'date.' It didn't seem like a date, though. It was just like her and Luis seeing a movie.
After a couple of minutes Hannah shoves her phone back into her pocket, sighing. She tried to picture what Luis would be doing- somehow, she can't imagine him posing nervously in front of the mirror for her. She smiled, so happy that both of their feeling are out in the open.
What's taking him? she thinks, about to get up and peek in the door, when she hears voices again. They are muffled and Hannah can only catch bits.
"Oh.. hello.." It's Maria's voice. She sounds like she's introducing herself.
"Yasmine..."
Yasmine? Who's Yasmine? Hannah wonders, listening intently.
"Nice to meet you!"
Then she hears Luis. "...study..."
Hannah stares at the door, confused. A couple of seconds later, it opens and she jumps back. A girl with shoulder length sandy brown hair steps out, talking to Luis. Her olive skin shines and her blue eyes sparkle as she gushes about something or other.
"Luis?" Hannah says, awkward, and aware that he hasn't looked at her yet.
"Oh, hey Hannah." Luis's hand rests on the girl's back. "This is my study partner, Yasmine."
"Hi!" Yasmine turns to Hannah and waves, her smile bright. Her clothes are bright and bold and eyecatching.
"Hey." Hannah gives a half-hearted wave, feeling slightly dull in comparison.
"Study partners are a compulsory thing." Luis says, shuffling.
"So, what are you guys doing tonight?" Yasmine asks, slinging a purple bag over her shoulder.
"Well, we were thinking of going to the movies." Luis says, glancing from Hannah to Yasmine. "Do you.. d'you want to come?"
