A young slave encounters another prisoner in the castle that isn't human!

This choice: An average day for Felix  •  Go Back...
Chapter #5

Savage World

by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr. Author IconMail Icon
It began as a normal day for Felix, because he was only expected to feed the girl and he only had to feed her twice a day. Once for lunch and once for dinner. He also had to start giving her a drink as well so that she wouldn't dehydrate. If the girl were to die because of an action from Felix, Lord William would have no hesitation in ordering Felix to death. Felix still had to do all his other usual tasks as well and he was finishing the last task he would have to do before feeding the girl in the cell. Felix was scrubbing the floors with other slaves and Ted was near him doing the same.

"I heard you were given another task," Ted whispered, "What did he give you this time?"

"I have to feed the Lord's new pet, give it water, and clean up after it," Felix answered.

"You'd think he'd get his beast master to do it," Ted commented.

"I don't think they're seeing eye to eye lately," Felix stated.

"So, is it a vicious beast like the dragon Lord William tried to tame and failed to? No doubt he's trying to tame this one," Ted stated. Ted was always fascinated by magical creatures and the monsters of the country. So, it was no surprise Ted was going to ask many questions about the creature.

"He is trying to tame it, but it's odd," Felix replied, "It's supposed to be very dangerous, but it doesn't seem like it. The 'pet' looks like a normal girl around our own age."

There was some silence as they continued their duties in scrubbing the throne room. However, Ted eventually broke the silence, "You know what my father used to do, right?"

Felix remembered Ted's story all too well. Unlike Felix who couldn't remember his parents, Ted did remember his parents. Ted was ten when he was sold into slavery and he was thirteen at the moment, three years older than Felix. Ted's father had studied magical creatures and monsters from many lands to learn about them and make records. Ted's father had passed most of his knowledge to Ted. Although, Ted didn't have the hard copies, only the memories of his teachings. Once Ted's father died, Ted's evil mother sold him into slavery for the money. "Your father studied magical beasts," Felix answered.

"Yes, but don't call them beasts. Many of the magical creatures such as dragons, griffins, and fairies have the same intelligence as humans and they wouldn't harm humans unless provoked," Ted informed Felix, "He taught nearly everything he knew and I know creatures that have or can take human form. I can help you figure out what she is if you can tell me if there were any strange things about her."

"Well, she had sharp teeth and could use magic by speaking," Felix told him.

"Sounds like a siren so far. Anything else?" Ted asked.

"She seemed very childish for her age and she had two swollen spots on her shoulder blades. The only reason I was able to see it was because her dress doesn't have any fabric around there," Felix added. The girl's dress strapped around her neck and her back above her midsection wasn't covered by the dress.

"Where their cuts on those swollen parts?" Ted questioned, "As if there used to be something there like wings?"

"She did say something about humans cutting her wings and her not being able to use as powerful of spells," Felix added.

"So, her magic comes from her wings. She's a fairy! They're going to have to keep cutting the wings, because if the base wasn't taken out, the wings will keep growing back. . I'm sure they didn't take out the base so they could use her powers if she's tamed, but there is something strange," Ted said.

"What's strange?" Felix asked.

"Was this fairy our size?" Ted questioned. Once Felix nodded Ted continued, "Fairies are usually around three inches. So, that means this fairy must have size changing capabilities. However, fairies of this country, or this world actually, can't change their size. The only explanation is that this is a Felaryan fairy."

"Felaryan," Felix asked. Felix had never heard that word before and was confused.

Ted didn't answer right away as a guard walked past. Ted and Felix had to stay quiet as the guard passed, because slaves weren't allowed to talk while working. Lord William didn't like slaves conversing with each other, because he had always feared a revolt. Once the guard was past, Ted answered, "Felarya is another world or another dimension. People can only get there through random portals and dimensional gates. My father went there for a year and found it to be a chaotic place. Everything is gigantic there."

"You mean like our country?" Felix interrupted.

"Although the country we live in has many giant creatures in our world that are larger than most countries, but Felaryan creatures are much bigger. Even elves in Felarya are close to a hundred feet tall, when their only slightly taller than humans here. There are even bugs there that can eat people! Humans are at the bottom of the food chain and a treasured snack in that world," Ted explained.

"Sounds like a terrible place for humans," Felix commented.

"That's not even the most demented part," Ted added, "The large predators there, have the same intelligence as humans. They can think, reason, feel emotions, and everything else humans can do with their mind. They are human in mind yet different and more gigantic species. These top predators eat humans and only see humans delicious snack. They see humans as candy, not people. They're savages. Would you eat a fairy of this world?"

"Of course not," Felix replied in disgust, "Eating another intelligent life form is like murder and cannibalism."

"Exactly," Ted replied, "Yet, Felaryan creatures have no remorse eating humans. Even creatures like angels, fairies, centaurs, mermaids, and elves are giants that eat people. Even large nekros eat human sized versions or their own race, and elves do the same."

Felix was horrified by this fact. He couldn't imagine eating something that could speak and think, let alone a miniature version of his own species. "Felarya is a savage world and Lord William must not realize what he has. Felaryan fairies love eating humans as well. He won't be able to tame it. As soon as he lets it grow back its wings, it will just eat everyone. How can you tame something like that. Hell, how can you even befriend something that has no remorse that sees humans as snacks?" Ted commented, "I may not see most of the magical creatures of this world as monsters, but Felaryan creatures truly are monsters."

"What kind of magic can she still use?" Felix questioned worriedly.

"Very minor spells, especially if she has to resort to using the magical language due to her missing wings. However, she still might be able to shrink humans for a short period of time," Ted answered.

"What's a short period of time?" Felix questioned.

"A couple of minutes or so. Just enough to shrink someone, grab them, and swallow them whole. Once you're in a fairies stomach, there's no way out. The stomach impervious to magic and you wont grow back to your normal height while in her stomach," Ted warned, "Stay as far as possible from that monster. She might shrink and eat you if you're in her reach."

Choice 1: Felix told Ted about the magic spell he was able to do. Ted told Felix only those with magic in their blood could make the magic language work.

Choice 2: Felix didn't tell Ted about the magic he was able to use, and Felix left to feed the fairy once he finished scrubbing.

You have the following choices:

1. Felix told Ted.

2. Felix didn't tell Ted.
